Tonight’s game isn’t mathematically a must-win for the Phillies, but it’s about as close to a must-win scenario as there is for a team that’s 3 1/2 games out of a playoff spot on September 1.

They will look to avoid what would be an embarrassing three-game sweep by the Mets in the nationally televised series finale.

It was a busy afternoon prior to the game with the team making a series of moves. Here’s the rundown:

Segura out of lineup

Jean Segura was originally slated to start at shortstop tonight, but he’s out of the lineup after learning of his grandmother’s passing. He’s headed to the Dominican Republic to attend to his family. Scott Kingery will shift from third base to shortstop, while Brad Miller steps in at third base. Miller will bat fifth.

Bruce back, Phils add reinforcements

Jay Bruce is back and available to hit off the bench tonight.

Meanwhile, the Phillies have recalled left-handed pitcher Cole Irvin and selected the contracts of infielder Phil Gosselin, catcher Deivy Grullon and right-handed reliever Nick Vincent from Lehigh Valley.  To make room for the additions, the Phillies have moved Adam Morgan (flexor strain) and Jerad Eickhoff (blister) to the 60-day IL. Right-handed pitcher Drew Anderson has been DFA’d.

Klentak supports Kapler

Matt Klentak was on MLB Network Radio earlier today and voiced his support of manager Gabe Kapler.

More moves to come

Expect more roster additions in the coming days. “Very good chance we see some more players come in the next three or four days,” Kapler said prior to the game.

Still, don’t expect to see the Phillies roll with 35 players on the active roster as Kapler explained the team is trying to find the right balance in terms of adding reinforcements.

“I might not mind if there’s 50 people in the clubhouse, but we live together, and so being sensitive to that, being aware of it being too many guys is something that we have all paid close attention to this season,” he said.
