Jahvon Quinerly was a five-star recruit who played one season at Villanova before transferring to Alabama.

After being originally denied an eligibility waiver by the NCAA last month, he spoke to the Committee for Legislative Relief on Monday, but had his appeal also denied. That means he’ll have to sit out until next year.

Bama Athletic Director Greg Byrne and head basketball coach Nate Oats released this statement in response to the news:

“We can’t begin to express how disappointed we are with this decision. Jahvon and his family have been through a set of circumstances that no student-athlete in the history of the NCAA has experienced. Their name has been falsely dragged through the mud for two years, and we felt confident that the NCAA Committee for Legislative Relief would recognize this very unique set of circumstances. We will continue to support Jahvon and his family in every way that we can.”

That “very unique set of circumstances” involves former Arizona assistant Emanuel “Book” Richardson, who in June was sentenced to three months in prison for his role in the NCAA federal bribery case. Quinerly was recruited by Richardson and originally committed to ‘Zona in 2017 but changed his commitment when the FBI began investigating the Wildcats’ basketball program.

After Monday’s ruling, Quinerly’s mom took to Twitter to express her annoyance:

Would love to find out more from Carenina Quinerly.
