Wide receivers coach Carson Walch doesn’t speak with reporters often. He’s asked to do media only a few times a year, when position coaches are made available down at the NovaCare Complex.

As such, I don’t expect him to be a public relations wizard. I feel bad burying the guy, who is working his first season in a new role after a summer promotion, but Monday he delivered one of the worst quotes I’ve ever heard.

Here’s Walch talking about Mack Hollins, who hasn’t caught a pass since September:

Walch:

Mack Hollins, yes he does not have the catches that you talked about. But at the end of the day when Mack Hollins grades out for us, he’s one of our top graders every week because he aligns right, he assigns right and he plays with great effort. We believe when the ball comes Mack’s way he’s going to make the play for us.

Great effort? Maybe on special teams, but Hollins has had 4-5 hideous lack of effort plays on offense this year, including this pathetic block “attempt” on an admittedly terrible play call:

Zack Rosenblatt over at NJ.Com has another quote from Walch, RE: why Hollins stinks:

“I don’t think there’s a direct reason and I know production is a word that’s getting thrown around a lot,” Walch said on Monday. “But production as a player, to me, isn’t just how many catches you have in a game. Each guy on our team has a role and right now Mack Hollins has done a very good job at his role. A lot of it is blocking but he’s running the routes we’re asking him to run, he’s getting to his depth and when the ball comes to Mack, he’ll make the play.”

Yeah? I’m highly skeptical.

(And of course Carson Walch needs to come out and protect his guys and have their back, so I understand where he’s coming from, but still…)
