Gabe Kapler is no longer the Phillies manager, but we get to follow him in San Francisco, where the locals are a little bit more into yoga and spirituality and all of that assorted nonsense, nonsense that a typical hard-working, blue collar Philadelphian would laugh at.

In a recent feature published by San Jose’s Mercury News, Kapler is profiled as the typically diligent and detailed health nut we’ve known him to be. That philosophy is exemplified in a paragraph that made me laugh, a story dating back to Kapler’s days at Moorpark College outside of Los Angeles:

Kapler credits a Moorpark nutrition class for teaching him the importance of eating right. When his team stopped at McDonald’s on the way back from a game at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, Kapler, having forgotten to pack his usual tuna-on-rye sandwich, peeled the skin off of all 40 of his Chicken McNuggets.

“I’m going, ‘Dude, that dude is real,’” said (former teammate Ryan) Briggs, who was in the same car. “He puts his money where his mouth is.”

Does it surprise anybody that Kapler would peel the skin off his Chicken McNuggets?

The real question is how healthy that actually makes the nuggets, or if it makes a difference at all. According to the McDonald’s website, 40 nuggets adds up to 1,660 calories, 99 grams of fat, 255 milligrams of cholesterol, and 102 grams of carbs. That fat total is 126% the daily recommended value.

After going through the “nutritional” label, seems like Kapler was doing the right thing by peeling the skin off the nuggets. A steady diet of nuggets would probably result in a heart attack.
