The Lakers opened at 4.5-point, with slight line movement down to -4.

The total has hovered around 216.

I’m not too concerned with props tonight though. Too much value to bet had elsewhere.

To be frank, the line feels high. As of yesterday, DraftKings Sportsbook told us 59% of the handle and 74% of total bets were on the Lakers to cover. Feels like an unbelievable fade the public opportunity (unless you take advantage of FanDuel’s odds boost, which you absolutely should).

No one knows how any team or player will react coming out of the four-month break. The Clippers are hurt being without Lou Williams, but this line should be much closer.

The Lakers are also the most heavily-bet team to win the NBA Championship at DraftKings, by a wide margin. They are receiving 33% of the action. Clearly, the public loves LeBron and Show Time.

But there’s more reason why the Clippers might make some sense tonight.

Win Probability

We love to look at FiveThirtyEight’s projections.

Both their RAPTOR and ELO forecasts have this as a closer game than it is listed for:

As you can see, both projections set the line much lower than it currently is.

At the consensus -192 moneyline, the Lakers are implied a 65.8% win probability. At +159, the Clippers are implied at 38.6% (those extra 4 points are the juice).

Given the unpredictability of the return from the break, the fact that these teams are evenly matched, and the win projections, it’s clear there’s value on betting the Clippers, particularly on the spread.

Analysis

The Lakers and Clippers have lived up to much of the preseason hype, entering play as the top and second-seeded teams in the Western Conference, respectively.

While the expectation of many of these teams meeting in the Western Conference Finals is a foregone conclusion, neither team will enter Thursday night’s matchup at full strength.

The Clippers will be without starting big man Montrezl Harrell, who’s had a career year, posting 18.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

Three-time reigning Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams will miss the game as he’s going through a league-mandated quarantine period after the guard allegedly went to the Magic City strip club without the league’s consent in addition to a league-approved trip outside of the bubble to attend his grandfather’s funeral.

To make matters worse in the backcourt, Patrick Beverley’s status, although upgraded to “questionable”, is far from certain.

The Lakers have their own issues.

The biggest name in question at the moment is the Lakers’ prized off-season acquisition Anthony Davis, who’s listed as “questionable” with an eye injury.

While it’s more likely than not he suits up, if he’s unable to go, the Lakers will struggle to replace his 26.7 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game.

In the backcourt, the Lakers saw Avery Bradley opt out of the league’s restart and Rajon Rondo had surgery on his thumb, which leaves him another 4-6 weeks from a return.

Both pieces of news mean we will likely see an increase in minutes for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

It’s a difficult game to predict, but the top-end talent still resides with Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and the Clippers, who won the first two of three games in the season series.

Picks and Prediction (How to Hedge Guaranteed Cash)

I’m betting the Clippers. Sort of. Here’s how and where.

First up, I’m taking the Lakers with the bet $20, get $100 boost available at DraftKings as a hedge against action on the Clippers elsewhere.

At FanDuel, I’m betting $50 on the Lakers to cover what will be an up to +20 line through their Spread the Love promo.
