At The Athletic, Shams Charania has some Sixers tidbits in a NBA notebook titled “Inside Pass.”

Two of the relevant passages:

Following their series sweep loss to the Celtics, the 76ers are expected to part ways with coach Brett Brown, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation say. It’s only a matter of when.

The franchise will have decisions to make throughout the entire organization this offseason. Keep in mind, however, that the team exercised a 2020-21 season contract option on GM Elton Brand just a few months ago and sources say he has maintained a healthy relationship with ownership.

….

Keep an eye on the following potential coaching candidates, according to sources: 76ers assistant Ime Udoka, Clippers assistant Ty Lue, Villanova’s Jay Wright, and former Grizzlies and Kings coach Dave Joerger.

Thoughts:

  1. Brett is gone, and I’d like for ownership to make the decision quickly. He’s served this franchise admirably for seven seasons and you need to release him and move on, instead of allowing him to be dragged in the press via leaks.
  2. If Elton has a good relationship with ownership, okay, but he’s partly responsible for putting together a horrible roster. He has not done anything over two seasons to justify keeping his job, and was borderline unqualified when he got it in the first place.

As far as the coaching candidates Shams listed, Udoka wouldn’t be a very exciting pick for Sixers fans, I don’t think. He’s another Popovich assistant with no head coaching experience, and people would probably feel like his resume is too similar to that of Brett’s, which might not be fair, but it’s how people think. It would be like firing Andy Reid for Marty Mornhinweg.

Lue has a ring and successfully managed the Cavaliers locker room and some diverse personalities en route to winning it all. He might be good at holding this team accountable and getting them to mesh better on and off the floor, but I’m not sure what he’d try to do from an X’s and O’s standpoint.

Jay Wright I wrote about this morning and I don’t have any thoughts on Dave Joerger, who has won just one playoff series as a head coach. He did some nice things with Memphis but was just a guy in Sacramento.
