Actually, he may already be in Philadelphia, but you get the idea.

According to Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic, Phillies top prospect Alec Bohm has received the big league call-up.

The 24-year-old Bohm, who will wear No. 28, is the organization’s top prospect, according to both several scouting services and baseball publications. Long-term, the Phillies would like to see him stick at third base, but it remains a possibility that he could eventually move across the diamond and man first.

Here’s what I wrote about Bohm on the night he was drafted:

Bohm’s draft stock soared last summer with a dominant performance in the Cape Cod League before posting an impressive .339 average with 14 doubles and 16 home runs during his junior year with the Shockers. He is a disciplined hitter that can work counts, a trait that seemingly meshes with the organization’s preference to find hitters that can run deep counts and are willing to work walks. He had more walks (39) than he did strikeouts (28) in 2018.

While the Phillies have posted stellar offensive numbers from a team standpoint, several infielders are currently struggling.

Second baseman Scott Kingery is just 4-for-40 and has yet to record an extra-base hit, while Rhys Hoskins is fresh off an 0-for-4 night that saw his average drop to .190 with a .642 OPS.

There are a few ways that Bohm could grab some playing time:

  • Current third baseman Jean Segura could slot over to second base, freeing up Bohm to play third. There’s something just not quite right with Kingery at the moment.
  • Segura could occasionally slide over to short and give Didi Gregorius an occasional breather, though the Phillies have to want Gregorius on the field as much as possible right now.
  • Bohm grabs some starts at first base as Hoskins works through his brutal season-long slump.

If I were a betting man, I would bet on the first scenario as the most likely. Bohm is also likely to pick up some plate appearances as a designated hitter.

How he gets on the field remains to be seen, but I expect that he will see a fair amount of playing time. He’s not coming up to collect dust. The development of Bohm and top pitching prospect Spencer Howard remains a priority for the Phillies, and consistent game action is needed to accomplish it.

Per Jim Salisbury, it sounds like there could be an injury involved here, so a corresponding IL move will probably help solve the mystery.

We will update this story as more details become available.

Update: The Phillies placed Adam Haseley (left wrist sprain) on the 10-day injured list, while Edgar Garcia has been designated for assignment.
