From the Flyers, via press release:

The Philadelphia Flyers have re-signed defenseman Robert Hagg to a two-year contract extension with an average annual value of $1.6 million, according to President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Chuck Fletcher.

Hagg, 25 (2/8/1995), is coming off his third full season with the Flyers and his sixth full season in North America. He registered three goals and 10 assists for 13 points in 49 games this season, along with a career-best plus-14 rating, and added three assists in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games. In 202 career games with the Flyers, Hagg has scored 11 goals and added 31 assists for 42 points, and has a career plus-minus rating of +16.

That seems like a slight discount for a guy who is going to be a 6th/7th defenseman and probably would have normally earned around two million.

I have been provided the following details and nuggets via our Flyers guys:

  1. Hagg was a restricted free agent. This new deal gets him to unrestricted free agency following the 2021-22 season.
  2. He gets $1.5 million this coming season and $1.7 million in the following season.
  3. Not the final nail in the Shayne Gostisbehere coffin, but Chuck Fletcher seems to have “hammer in hand at this point.”

Anthony also told me to note that players might have to take slight salary reductions because of the flat cap that’s going to be part of the NHL for the next two or three seasons. COVID affected hockey more than the other sports, since it’s a little more gate revenue-dependent than football and basketball, for example.

“Shayne Gostisbehere is available for trade, multiple sources around the league told me over the weekend. Which isn’t totally shocking, but what’s funny in a way that for all the trade rumours linked to him in the past, this is really the first time the Flyers have shown a serious willingness to move him if they get the right offer.”

“The 27-year-old blueliner has three more years on his deal at a $4.5 million cap hit, although the cash payout is $3.25 million per season from here on out because it was a front-loaded deal. That might be appealing to some teams.”

“He screams change of scenery, that’s for sure. And it appears he may get one.”

This shouldn’t surprise anybody. Ghost only played five games in the bubble and has been out of favor for some time now.
