Dak Prescott broke his ankle Sunday. Compound fracture and dislocation, which made for a tough sequence to watch on TV.

The Cowboys quarterback underwent successful surgery with Dr. Gene Curry of the Carrell Clinic, who specializes in foot and ankle injuries for athletes. Prescott is reportedly set to be released from the hospital today.

We could safely assume that Dak is out for the rest of the year, though we didn’t get any sort of official or blue checkmark report until this tweet from Jane Slater, echoing the 4-6 month time frame that medical experts had mentioned on social media as a typical recovery window:

Even a rapid, Brandon Brooks-esque return would only get Prescott back for mid-December, which is week 14 or 15. But he’s going to need time to get back into football shape and strengthen the ankle, so it would take nothing short of a major miracle for him to return to the field this season.

The Cowboys hand the reigns to Andy Dalton, who came in yesterday and went 9 for 11 for 111 yards in a comeback win. Dallas is 2-3 and their defense stinks, but Dalton is an experienced guy who can certainly lead a crappy team to a playoff berth by winning the worst division in football.

Get excited for NFC East football!
