Back in August, Crossing Broad reported that Derrick Gunn and others were being let go by NBC Sports Philadelphia as part of another inexplicable round of layoffs.

Among those people was Sixers sideline reporter Serena Winters, who was in her second full season with the team. Similar to Gregg Murphy’s situation, she finished out the NBA campaign and today said goodbye to Philadelphia:

Winters replaced Molly Sullivan back in 2018, joining the Marc Zumoff and Alaa Abdelnaby broadcast team. She also appeared on the pregame and postgame shows and created web content. Winters came to Philadelphia from the west coast, where she spent a number of years covering the Lakers for Time Warner and LakersNation.com.

Sources told us in the summer that the NBC regional networks were moving away from “sideline reporters,” which seems to be backed by Philadelphia’s decision to let go of Winters and Murphy. Longtime Celtics sideline reporter Abby Chin was also let go. We were also told by multiple sources that Taryn Hatcher’s role might be changing, though to clarify, she was not part of this latest round of layoffs. Our reporting might have been vague at the time, so to explain it better and clear up any confusion, the sources who told us about Gunn and Winters leaving the station also said that the traditional sideline role was being “re-evaluated,” but reiterated that Taryn is still under contract right now.

Right, good luck to Serena at her next stop.
