As if the COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t enough to worry about, now we’ve got a Listeria outbreak starting up.

The Centers for Disease Control says 10 people were hospitalized in Florida, Massachusetts, and New York, and testing has thus far revealed that deli meat is the culprit:

In interviews with 9 ill people, all reported eating Italian-style meats, such as salami, mortadella, and prosciutto. They reported purchasing prepackaged deli meats and meats sliced at deli counters at various locations.

A specific type of deli meat and common supplier have not yet been identified.

Italian-style meats? We’re screwed!

As a conservative estimate, I’d say 85% of Delaware Valley residents have eaten Italian deli meat in the last week. In South Philly and Mayfair, that number jumps to 99.99% If Tony Soprano were a real human being, Gabagool would be off the table, both literally and figuratively. I don’t know what he would eat.

But on a serious note, the CDC says you should avoid deli meats right now unless they’re heated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees before eating.
