Josh McCown was brought back to the Eagles this offseason, sort of.

He was added to the practice squad but lived in Texas while serving as a mentor  in the quarterback room, working remotely from home while taking on the role of emergency quarterback.

Now he’s off the Birds practice squad to join the Texans, according to his agent:

This would make him the #3 quarterback behind Deshaun Watson and AJ McCarron.

What does it mean for his Eagles future? There were some rumors that the Birds liked him as a coaching candidate and wanted to keep him around the organization for those purposes. It could certainly still be the case that he serves as a third-stringer down in Houston and then the Birds find a role for him up here, if he wants to do that.

This will be the tenth NFL team the 41 year old McCown has signed with. He’s played for the Cardinals, Lions, Raiders, Bears, Panthers, Bucs, Browns, Jets, and Eagles. That’s a pretty impressive list.

The Birds, meantime, have Jalen Hurts and Nate Sudfeld backing up Carson Wentz, so they’re good.
