Let’s get it back to the Phillies, who at this moment look to be the most poorly-run team in Philadelphia. They traded for J.T. Realmuto and wouldn’t commit to an extension, so the guy is now a free agent as they look to cheap out during COVID-19 amid declining revenue. Matt Klentak is gone, sort of, but Andy MacPhail continues as President while appearing to be clueless.

Other than that, everything is good.

But back to Realmuto for a minute. Surely he wouldn’t sign for Steve Cohen and the newly-energized New York Mets, would he?

At MLB.com, a roundtable discussion with Todd Zolecki, Mark Feinsand, Anthony DiComo, and Alyson Footer touches on the topic, and they all think that’s where J.T. ends up:

Footer: Last question — here comes the part where I put you on the spot. Where will Realmuto sign? Go!

Feinsand: Mets. Five years, $125 million. That’s $25 million per year, which would be a new record for a catcher.

DiComo: Mets. Look, we have no track record with Steve Cohen, so it’s not easy to say with 100 percent clarity how he will operate. But I genuinely believe the Mets will prioritize the position and prioritize the player, and get their guy in Cohen’s first big splash.

Feinsand: Be careful what you say, Todd. Philly is watching.

Zolecki: I’m going to pick the Mets. I think the Phillies still have a shot, but there’s so much uncertainty right now with their leadership. It doesn’t look like they’re in any hurry to hire a new GM or president of baseball operations. Who’s doing the negotiating? But if Realmuto can’t find his market, I can see the Phillies bringing him back.

Jesus. That sounds terrible.

Imagine trading Sixto Sanchez (and a serviceable backup catcher in Jorge Alfaro) for Realmuto, and you can’t even get a long-term deal done, then the guy signs for a division rival instead. Utter disaster if that happens. I’m already vomiting in my mouth. It gives me nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, and diarrhea. Pass the Pepto Bismol.
