In a surprising development, Virginia online sports betting is set to go live as early as 5 p.m. on Thursday. FanDuel Sportsbook announced its Virginia launch in a Tweet last night featuring new personality Erin Dolan:

Bettors physically located in the state will immediately become eligible to legally wager on sports just ahead of the NFC and AFC championship games on Sunday.

The launch of FanDuel Sportsbook, and online sports betting in general, in Virginia comes as a bit of a surprise. Though sports betting was legalized in Virginia about six months ago, the timing of a rollout was somewhat unexpected.

Virginia Online Sports Betting Launches Thursday

Virginia’s online sports betting rollout also comes a day before the anticipated arrival of online sports betting in Michigan, which is expected to go live on Friday at noon.

While Michigan’s sports betting launch will debut as many as 10 different sportsbooks, there’s a bit of uncertainty over how many apps will be immediately available at launch in Virginia.

One definite will be FanDuel Sportsbook, which broke the news via Twitter that it would begin operations in the state “quicker than we expected.”

While it is currently unclear if FanDuel Virginia will have competition immediately, rival sportsbooks such as DraftKings Sportsbook and BetMGM will likely enter the market in the coming days and weeks.

How to Bet with FanDuel on Sports Online in Virginia

With online sports betting now arriving in Virginia, it’s important to know how to get set up with sports betting apps.

The good news is that registering for Viginia online sports betting is an easy process, one that can be completed from anywhere in the state. That’s because Virginia regulations permit full mobile registration.

  • Sign up with FanDuel Sportsbook using this link.
  • Complete a brief registration process
  • Make a first deposit by choosing one of the safe and convenient banking methods available (online checking, PayPal, debit card and credit card, among others).

In terms of the first deposit amount, a simple $10 wager will get things started… though larger deposits do help bettors extract the maximum value out of most new user sign up bonuses. In the case of FanDuel, bettors will be refunded up to $1,000 in site credit if a first bet loses, but accounts need to be funded with the maximum wager amount obviously.

Bettors must be at least 21 years of age to deposit and wager.

What to Bet on This Weekend

They say that timing is everything, and that’s certainly true for the launch of Virginia online sports betting. It ensures that wagering is up and running ahead of the Super Bowl, which is, without question, the nation’s biggest sports betting day of the year.

Before the big game, there are plenty of other events to wager on. NBA, NHL and NCAAB regular season action leads into a weekend highlighted by the return of Conor McGregor at UFC 257 and the NFL’s conference championship games.

Notably, the NFC Championship Game featuring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs will mark the first game in which Virginia sports bettors can legally wager on NFL action.

Throughout the weekend, FanDuel Virginia will offer a variety of promos and special odds boost that enhance the ways to wager and win.
