Preview

It had been quite some time since the Charlotte Hornets were an interesting enough team to warrant national coverage, but this past offseason Charlotte GM Mitch Kupchak added to his team’s talent with a top-3 pick and a major free agent signing. LaMelo Ball, the younger brother of Pelicans point guard Lonzo Ball, has made his presence known since being drafted #3 overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. Ball has gotten better each game, hitting 45.5% of his shots from beyond the arc and demonstrating some elite vision on the court. The Hornets also spent some big-time money as they signed Gordon Hayward, who opted out of his contract with the Boston Celtics earlier in the off-season. While it’s hard to imagine Hayward living up to the 4-year, $120m deal he signed with the Hornets, his instant chemistry with his former teammate Terry Rozier has been apparent.

The Sixers have really ramped up their game since getting blown out by the Cleveland Cavaliers, when they were without franchise center Joel Embiid. After a come from behind win over the Toronto Raptors, Philadelphia trounced the Orlando Magic and former #1 overall pick Markelle Fultz in a 116-92 road win. The Sixers will look to continue an incredible streak as they haven’t lost a game at Wells Fargo Center since 2019.

Sixers Win and Under 216 Points (+128, DraftKings)

The Sixers have lived up to the preseason hype and are 4-0 this season with Joel Embiid in the lineup. They’ve won 17 consecutive games at Wells Fargo Center dating back to the 2019-20 season. They haven’t lost at home since 2019. The’ve been installed as a double-digit favorite, though the cost to make any real money on a Sixers moneyline bet is expensive. We’d suggest parlaying a Sixers moneyline bet with under 216 points. While 216 total points isn’t a high threshold to come in under, consider the O/U trends for the teams this season.

Each of the Sixers’ first five games on the season have gone under the total points threshold:

  • vs. Washington: 220 points (U 231.0)
  • @ New York: 198 points (U 215.0)
  • @ Cleveland: 212 points (U 217.5)
  • vs. Toronto: 193 points (U 219.5)
  • @ Orlando: 208 points (U 219.0)

Meanwhile, the Hornets have seen their last four games go under the total points line:

  • vs. Oklahoma City: 216 points (U 219.5)
  • vs. Brooklyn: 210 points (U 233.0)
  • @ Dallas: 217 points (U 225.0)
  • vs. Memphis: 201 points (U 220.0)

If you think the law of averages is bound to hit the over, you can parlay that with the Sixers to win at +123, but we fully expect the Sixers to keep this a low-scoring contest.

Sixers, Hawks, and Raptors All to Win (+220, FOX Bet)

This bet features three favorites looking to take home a victory. The Sixers are the safest bet of the three as outlined above. Let’s take a look at the other two games in this bet.

The Atlanta Hawks have the second-best odds of the three favorites in this bet and have been installed as a -250 moneyline favorite as they host the 3-2 Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs have been a bit of a surprise this season, but Atlanta guard Trae Young has been unconscious from the field racking up 30.6 points per game (3rd in the NBA).

The Toronto Raptors have been one of the most disappointing teams in the league this season. After starting a woeful 0-3, the Raptors blew out the New York Knicks 100-83 in a home win that allowed them to exhale at least for a moment. They’re on the road taking on the 3-2 New Orleans Pelicans, who bounced back from a 111-86 road loss to the Suns with a 113-80 romp of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The bet really hinges on this matchup. If you believe Toronto has righted the ship and will take down former #1 overall pick Zion Williamson’s team, you could stand to profit big time.

Note: a $50 max bet would pay out $160 if this bet hits.

Sixers to Win and Each Team to Score Over 99.5 Points (-115, FOX Bet)

If the O/U makes you uneasy and you believe the Sixers will have a tough time holding Charlotte’s perimeter scorers in check, this bet pays out at a much better value than a Sixers moneyline wager. Each team has scored 100+ points in four of their five games this season. The only downside to this bet is how well the Sixers have held the opposition in check thus far this season. In fact, the only team to have scored 100+ points against Philadelphia with Joel Embiid in the lineup was the Washington Wizards on opening night. For what it’s worth, Washington has racked up 117.8 points per game, which is the fifth-highest average in the entire league, while Charlotte’s 107.6 points per game ranks 22nd, just two spots ahead of Philadelphia.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Ben Simmons, Julius Randle, and Zion Williamson All to Record Double-Doubles (+700, FOX Bet)

The odds are long, but the potential payout is big on this one. All three players are more than capable of recording a double-double in their respective games. Julius Randle is the lone player averaging a double-double on the season, averaging 23.0 points and 10.4 rebounds per game for the New York Knicks. He’s posted a double-double in three consecutive games, including a triple-double against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He’s also had a ton of success against the Pacers. A season ago, he averaged 13.0 points and 12.3 rebounds per game in three matchups against Indiana.

Ben Simmons averaged 15.5 points and 9 rebounds per game over the first two games of the season, recorded a double-double against the Raptors, and fell one point and two assists short of a triple-double in just 25 minutes of action against the Orlando Magic. Despite not playing against the Hornets in 2019-20, Simmons averaged 21.8 points and 10 rebounds per game in four games against Charlotte in 2018-19.

Zion Williamson posted a double-double in each of New Orleans first three games of the season. He followed that stretch up with a 20 point and two rebound performance against the Suns and a 12 point and five rebound performance in just 17 minutes against the Thunder. In two games against Toronto a season ago, Williamson averaged 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

Note: a max bet of $25 would pay out $200 if it hits.

Sixers vs. Hornets Prediction

Pick: This game should represent a straight-forward win for the Sixers. Given the teams’ combined propensity for going under the total point threshold, take the Sixers to Win and Under 216 points. If that total makes you a bit nervous, explore some alternative point totals. Also, take a flier on the three players to record a double-double promo.
