On Sunday night, the Philadelphia Flyers will meet the Boston Bruins for the second of the NHL’s two-game outdoor series in Lake Tahoe.

Let’s get into our Flyers-Bruins betting pick with player prop predictions, odds and analysis for this February 21, 2021 matchup.

Flyers vs. Bruins Betting Pick (February 21, 2021)

The Philadelphia Flyers enter this contest coming off a 3-2 shootout loss to the New York Rangers. That game represented the team’s first game in a week and a half, following a number of players entering the NHL’s COVID Protocol. A number of Philadelphia’s biggest contributors will miss this special outdoor game in Lake Tahoe, including:

  • Justin Braun
  • Claude Giroux
  • Travis Konecny
  • Scott Laughton
  • Oskar Lindblom
  • Jakub Voracek

The absence of these players was felt in Thursday’s shootout loss, but the team was able to keep the game competitive. However, that was against a New York Rangers squad that entered play at just 4-7-3. The Flyers’ opponent in this one is a Boston Bruins team that’s handed Philadelphia four consecutive losses this season.

The Bruins handed the Flyers a 5-4 shootout loss in the teams’ first meeting on January 21. They followed that up with a 6-1 victory two days later, one which also came in Boston. The Bruins then swept a two-game road trip against the Flyers with a 4-3 OT win on February 3 and a 2-1 regulation win on February 5. With the Flyers shorthanded, it stands to reason Boston will skate away with their fifth victory against the Flyers in five attempts.

Bets We Like With a Flyers Win

Money Puck gives the Flyers just a 44.5% chance of winning this outdoor game. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is an even lower 37%.

Flyers Win and Under 5.5 Goals (+310, DraftKings)

To be clear, we would advise siding with the oddsmakers and projection model in this one, taking the Bruins to win. They’re the deeper team and they’ve been dominant this season as indicated by their 8-1-2 record.

If you’re still convinced that the Orange & Black will come away with the outdoor win, take the under. If you take a look at the final scores between the teams this season, it would appear this is a bit of bad advice. After all, the teams combined for nine goals in the first matchup, and seven in each of the next two. However, by the fourth meeting between the teams, the squads settled in and played to a 2-1 result.

The Flyers are missing six players, including five of their best forwards. If the Flyers are to win this game, it’ll have to come through a defensively-sound game in which they limit Boston’s opportunities in the offensive zone, while staying out of the penalty box.

Bets We Like With a Bruins Win

Bruins Win and Over 5.5 Goals (+210, DraftKings)

This is the result and moneyline/total goals parlay worth betting on. While the Flyers will only be missing one of their regular defensemen, Justin Braun, they’ll also be without Scott Laughton and Oskar Lindblom, who are excellent penalty killers and sound defensive forwards at even strength.

There is potential for a low-scoring choppy ice situation, as was seen in Saturday’s game between the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights, but ultimately, this game should see Boston getting and executing on multiple power play opportunities. Simply put, this Boston Bruins squad is exponentially more talented than the Rangers squad that beat Philadelphia in overtime. Boston might hit the over 5.5 goals on their own if they get three or more opportunities on the powerplay.

David Pastrnak to Score a Goal and Bruins to Win (+220, FOX Bet)

David Pastrnak has only played in eight games this season, which includes two matchups with the Philadelphia Flyers. He’s made the most of his opportunities in those games to the tune of three goals and two assists, including a hat trick on February 3. Add to that the fact that he’s historically performed well against the Flyers in his career at more than a point per game with 20 points in 18 games. For his career, he’s averaged a goal in two out of every three games against the Flyers.

Pastrnak found the back of the net against the Devils on Thursday and has three points overall in his last two games. If you’re looking for a player prop to add to a Boston win, get in on this one.

The Flyers have scored in each of their 13 games on the season, while Boston has conceded at least one goal in 13 of their 14 games. Additionally, Philadelphia has racked up nine goals in four games against Boston thus far this season.

James van Riemsdkyk to Score a Goal (+300, BetMGM)

Given the absence of Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek, and Travis Konecny, the Flyers will lean heavily on James van Riemsdyk to continue his scoring ways. In four games against the Bruins this season, JVR has scored three goals, including a two-goal performance on January 21.

He’s got two goals to his credit over the last three games, including one against Boston in a home loss. The outdoor ice condition could pose a real issue for less-experience players, but this isn’t van Riemsdyk’s first outdoor game at the NHL level. His shooting quality should shine under the lights in Lake Tahoe.
