On Wednesday night, the Philadelphia Flyers will play host to the New York Rangers. The Flyers (8-4-3) are four points ahead of the Rangers (6-7-3) in the standings with a game in hand. New York pulled off a 3-2 shootout win over the Flyers in a shootout in Philadelphia’s first game back following a lengthy NHL-mandated shutdown due to multiple players entering the league’s COVID Protocol.

Let’s get into our Flyers-Rangers betting pick with player prop predictions, odds and analysis for this February 24, 2021 matchup.

Flyers vs. Rangers Betting Pick (February 24, 2021)

The Philadelphia Flyers enter this contest following a 7-3 blowout loss in Lake Tahoe to the Boston Bruins. That loss dropped them to 0-1-1 since returning from a league-mandated pause following a number of players entering the NHL’s COVID Protocol. Captain Claude Giroux has been taken off the list, however there are still a number of key contributors who remain on it including:

  • Justin Braun
  • Travis Konecny
  • Scott Laughton
  • Oskar Lindblom
  • Jakub Voracek

The Rangers followed up a 3-2 shootout win over the Flyers last Thursday with a 4-1 win in Washington on Saturday. Unfortunately for New York, their leading goal scorer and assists man Artemi Panarin will be out of the lineup. A story emerged out of Russia concerning allegations of Panarin getting into a physical confrontation with a 19-year-old woman years ago, which has been forcefully denied by the player and the Rangers organization. As such, he’s opted to take a couple of weeks to focus on this situation. Meanwhile, Kaapo Kakko remains out on COVID protocol.

Flyers vs. Rangers Odds

  • Moneyline: Flyers -132, Rangers +115

Bets We Like With a Flyers Win

Money Puck gives the Flyers just a 50.8% chance of winning this game. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is slightly higher at 53%.

Flyers Win and Over 4.5 Goals (+125, BetMGM)

While most sportsbooks have this game’s Over/Under set at 5.5 goals, BetMGM is offering a special boost on the Flyers to Win and Over 4.5 total goals.

The importance of the expected return of Flyers captain Claude Giroux cannot be overstated. His presence in the lineup allows head coach Alain Vigneault the flexibility to stabilize the team’s top six forwards, while the team looks to field a lineup devoid of two defensemen filling in at forward like in Sunday’s game against Boston. One of those defensemen, Mark Friedman, was claimed today on waivers by former Flyers GM Ron Hextall and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

As for the 4.5 total goals, Philadelphia has seen the over hit in 10 of 15 games this season, while they’ve seen the total goals go over 4.5 in four of their last five games, including both since resuming their season. While the Rangers have struggled to score at 5-on-5 this season, they’ve seen the total goals go over 4.5 in four of their last five games.

Bets We Like With a Rangers Win

Mika Zibanejad to Score a Goal and Rangers to Win (+360, FOX Bet)

Despite the Flyers being shorthanded yet again combined with the fact that New York won the last meeting between these teams, we’d recommend avoiding a Rangers moneyline bet. However, if you’re planning on going that route and want a player parlay to add in, consider taking Mika Zibanejad to score a goal and the Rangers to win.

Artemi Panarin’s absence from the lineup could lead to the Flyers focusing more of their gameplan on shutting down a player who had been a prolific scorer as recently as last season. However, Zibanejad has struggled this season, finding the back of the net just two times in 16 games. There’s value here as Zibanejad broke a 12-game goalless drought in the Rangers last game against Washington. Sometimes all it takes to get a goalscorer going on a run is getting the first one to break a slump.

Joel Farabee to Score a Goal Anytime (+250, FOX Bet)

Claude Giroux is expected to stabilize a forward corps that’s still missing Jakub Voracek, Travis Konecny, Scott Laughton, and Oskar Lindblom. One of the players who could benefit the most is Joel Farabee. The second-year forward has given consistent effort all season and has seen a real uptick in scoring as of late. He’s scored a goal in each of the Flyers’ two games since resuming their season. Overall, he’s put up six goals and three assists in his last six games.

With the Flyers’ scoring options still limited due to COVID protocol, look for Farabee to get plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net.

James van Riemsdyk to Record Over 0.5 Point (-115, BetMGM)

If you’re looking for a rock-solid player prop to get behind, consider taking JVR to record at least one point against the New York Rangers. Since resuming their season, the Flyers have benefited from van Riemsdyk’s steady play, including a three-point performance (1G, 2A) against the Bruins. He’s had at least one point in nine of his last eleven games, including multiple points in six of those nine efforts. In three games against New York a year ago, van Riemsdyk was a point-per-game player, scoring one goal and dishing out two assists in three games.

While -115 odds aren’t going to pay out a ridiculous multiplier, this is a bet that could be worth placing a larger wager on for a bigger return.

Flyers vs. Rangers Prediction

Pick: The return of Flyers captain Claude Giroux should provide the much needed boost Philadelphia needs to snap a two-game skid. Take the Flyers to Win and Over 4.5 Goals with BetMGM. Also, consider getting in on -115 odds for James van Riemsdyk to record a point against the Blueshirts.
