Flyers vs. Capitals Betting Pick (March 11, 2021)

The Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals have met twice this season, with the first meeting going Philadelphia’s way in a 7-4 victory in Washington, DC, while the Capitals took home the result in a 3-1 win in Philadelphia this past Sunday.

The latter result was a disappointing result for the Flyers, who were welcoming fans into the Wells Fargo Center for the first time in nearly a year’s time. It was also a perfect situation for franchise netminder Carter Hart to get himself in a groove, but that did not come to pass.

It got even worse for Hart on Tuesday night when he was pulled from the game prior to the second period after allowing three goals on just eight shots against in the first period. Brian Elliott came into the game to stabilize the situation, ultimately leading his squad to a 5-4 shootout win, one which saw the backup goalie stop both shots he faced in the shootout.

Washington returned home after Sunday’s victory and followed it up with a 5-4 overtime win against the visiting New Jersey Devils. Jakub Vrána found the back of the net twice, while Dimitry Orlov, TJ Oshie, and Daniel Sprong each contributed a goal apiece. Washington is now 6-1-0 in their last seven games and 9-2-1 in their last twelve games. Another road win against the Flyers would be huge in keeping them in the hunt for the top seed in the East Division.

Bets We Like With a Flyers Win

Money Puck gives the Flyers a 54% chance of winning this game. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is a near toss-up at 51%.

Flyers Win and Over 5.5 Goals (+200, BetMGM)

Tuesday night’s shootout win over the Buffalo Sabres could serve as a real wakeup call for a team that many pundits, prior to the season, believed should finish in the top two spots in this competitive East Division. While the Flyers are far from a must-win situation, the standings are what they are at the moment. Philadelphia currently resides in fifth place with 2-3 games in hand over the top three seeds in the division, but they simply cannot allow the gap between themselves and the Caps to grow, nor can they take positives out of losing either two or all three of a three-game series this week.

Based on postgame comments from head coach Alain Vigneault following Tuesday night’s win, in stands to reason he’ll go with Brian Elliott in net for the home side in this game, which should bode well for the Orange & Black. In two games against Washington a season ago, Elliott was 2-0-0 with a .926 SV% and a 2.00 GAA.

As for the over 5.5 goals, there’s real value based on how the teams have been scoring as of late. The Flyers have seen the total goals hit the 7+ goals in four of their last five games. The first matchup of the season saw Philadelphia skate away with a 7-4 victory. Plus, Washington is coming off a five-goal performance just a couple of nights ago. A 4-2 Flyers win feels about right in this one.

Sean Couturier to Record Over 0.5 Point (-143, DraftKings)

Reigning Selke Trophy winner Sean Couturier has 16 points to his credit in 12 full games this season. He’s recorded at least one point in ten of his last eleven games, including six goals and nine assists.

It’s worth noting that Couturier has had plenty of success in his two games against the team from the nation’s capital this season, recording two goals and two assists. Plus, even going back to last season, he was a point per game player against Washington, registering two goals and two assists in four games.

We’ve touted this exact market in a number of games this season, and it’s paid dividends consistently.

Alex Ovechkin to Score 1+ Goal (+125, BetMGM)

Alex Ovechkin is one of the most prolific goal scorers in NHL history, and he’s had plenty of success this season against the Orange & Black. In his first game against Philadelphia this season, Ovechkin put on a show in DC on his way to scoring two goals and contributing two assists. In the second matchup with the Flyers, Ovechkin scored a goal in the Capitals’ 3-1 victory.

Ovechkin’s success this season against the Flyers is more in line with what he did in 2018-19 as a point-per-game player against the City of Brotherly Love as opposed to last season, when he was held off the scoresheet in four games.

In his career, Ovechkin has racked up 64 points (37 G, 27A) in 59 career games against Philadelphia. With the Flyers allowing goals with relative ease, Ovechkin finding the back of the net could provide some real value.

Flyers vs. Capitals Prediction

Pick: The Flyers will look for redemption and they’ll get it in a 4-2 home victory in front of ~3,000 fans. Take the Flyers to Win and Over 5.5 Goals. Also, get in on Sean Couturier to register at least one point.
