On Tuesday night, the Philadelphia Flyers will be on the road facing the Washington Capitals. This represents the fifth meeting between the teams this season and the second to take place at the Capital One Arena.

Let’s get into our Flyers-Capitals betting pick with player prop predictions, odds and analysis for this April 13, 2021 matchup.

Flyers vs. Capitals Betting Pick (April 13, 2021)

The Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals will take to the ice at the Capital One Arena for the second time this season in Washington in the teams’ fifth meeting overall. However, this one will look a bit different, as it takes place one day removed from the passing of the NHL trade deadline. Philadelphia didn’t acquire any players, they sent away two in failed offseason acquisition Erik Gustafsson and longtime Flyers forward Michael Raffl. While the former was shipped north of the border to the Montreal Canadiens, the latter was sent down I-95 to play for a contender: the Washington Capitals.

The Flyers are coming off a disappointing 5-3 home loss to the Buffalo Sabres, who effectively ended Philadelphia’s postseason hopes. Four points behind the Boston Bruins, who hold two games in hand, while level on points with the New York Rangers, the Flyers will likely begin getting some of their prospects like Wade Alison and Tanner Laczynski valuable regular season ice time for the remainder of the season.

The Washington Capitals enter play on top of the stacked East Division at 27-11-4 with 58 points. This game could have massive implications as the New York Islanders hold an identical record, while the Pittsburgh Penguins are just two points off the pace for the top seed in the division. The Caps have won each of their last two games, both of which came on the road. After taking down the basement-dwelling Buffalo Sabres 4-3 on Friday, Washington laid the proverbial smackdown on the playoff-contending Boston Bruins in an 8-1 blowout at TD Garden.

Will the Capitals pick up a win and remain on top of the division, or will the Flyers play spoiler for a night?

Bets We Like With a Capitals Win

Money Puck gives the Capitals a 55.7% chance of winning this game. Meanwhile, Washington’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is slightly higher at 59%.

Capitals Win and Over 5.5 Goals (+155, DraftKings Sportsbook)

The Washington Capitals are one of the best teams in the entire National Hockey League. In fact, only the West-leading Colorado Avalanche (62 points) and North-leading Toronto Maple Leafs (59 points) have amassed more points through 42 games than the team from the nation’s capital. The Capitals are 6-4-0 over their last four games. They’ve also won three-straight games against the Flyers this season.

As for taking the total goals line, we’d encourage interested bettors to hedge down half a goal from six goals down to 5.5 and taking the over. These teams have met four times this season with each game seeing at least eight goals being scored in three of the first meetings between the teams this season:

  • 2/7/21 PHI @ WSH: 7-4 (PHI win)
  • 3/7/21 WSH @ PHI: 3-1 (WSH win)
  • 3/11/21 WSH @ PHI: 5-3 (WSH win)
  • 3/13/21 WSH @ PHI: 5-4 (WSH win)

The Capitals have seen the over 5.5 goals market hit in each of their last three games and four of their last five overall. The Flyers, meanwhile have seen the total goals scored go over five in each of their last eight games, with half of them going over 5.5 goals. Given the recent scoring trends of each team, as well as the total goals scored between the teams in the first four matchups, hedging down to 5.5 goals and taking the over with a Capitals moneyline bet could represent real value.

Capitals to Win and Both Teams to Score 2+ Goals in Regular Time (+220, BetMGM)

The Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers have lit the lamp with regularity this season, especially when playing each other. As it pertains to the four previous meetings between the teams this season, the Capitals have scored at least three goals in each contest and 4.25 goals per game against the Flyers this season. The Flyers, meanwhile have scored at least three goals in three of the four games, averaging 4.7 goals per game across those three contests. However, it’s also worth noting they were held to a single goal in the second meeting of the season.

The Capitals have scored at least two goals in ten of their last eleven games. Interestingly enough, the Flyers have also scored at least two goals in ten of their last eleven games. Given the recent and historical trends, it stands to reason that this bet is a worthwhile one to consider in the event that you’re looking for more value than a Capitals moneyline bet alone.

Alexander Ovechkin to Record 2+ Points (+215, DraftKings Sportsbook)

Alexander Ovechkin has made himself at home in this realigned East Division in the abbreviated 2021 season. He’s found the back of the net 21 times to go with 16 assists (37 points) in 38 games. Ovechkin has recorded at least two points in nine games this season, including twice against the Flyers in their four meetings thus far. In those four games against the Orange & Black, Ovechkin has put up seven points (5 goals, 2 assists). It’s also worth noting that Ovechkin has 66 points in 61 career games against the Flyers, more than a point per game.

Given the importance of this game for the Capitals, who are in tough battle for the top seed in the East Division, Ovechkin could be set for a huge game against a Philadelphia team whose playoff chances were dealt all but a final blow in a loss to the Sabres.

DraftKings Sportsbook has Ovechkin to score a point at -240 odds, but the jump up to 2+ points at +215 odds is certainly worth a larger potential payout.

Flyers vs. Capitals Prediction

Pick: Although the Flyers have traditionally played some of their best hockey with their backs against the wall, the Washington Capitals are a more talented team playing better hockey with aspirations of locking up the top seed in the East Division. Take the Capitals to Win and Both Teams to Score 2+ Goals in Regular Time.
