On Thursday night, the Philadelphia Flyers will be on the road to take on the New York Islanders. This represents the seventh meeting between the teams this season and the fourth to take place at Nassau Coliseum.

Let’s get into our Flyers-Islanders betting pick with player prop predictions, odds and analysis for this April 8, 2021 matchup.

Flyers vs. Islanders Betting Pick (April 8, 2021)

The Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders have had quite the season series through six games. Philadelphia appeared to have exorcised the demons from last season’s seven-game playoff series against their neighbors to the north, winning each of the first three meetings between the teams this season. After two home wins in overtime, Philadelphia took their first contest in New York 4-3 in regulation in the midst of a terrible month of March.

That’s when things turned, as the Islanders blew out the Flyers 6-1 two days later at home and secured a road win in overtime two days after that. Just three games ago, the Islanders handed Philadelphia another loss via a shootout in a game that saw a strong performance from 22-year-old netminder Carter Hart.

Philadelphia will enter play coming off a 4-2 home loss to the Boston Bruins, their third loss in four games. Meanwhile, the Islanders are riding a three-game winning streak, all of which have come at home.

Will the Islanders collect their fourth-consecutive victory over the Flyers or will the Orange & Black get back to their winning ways?

Bets We Like With an Islanders Win

Money Puck gives the Islanders a 64.7% chance of winning this game. Meanwhile, New York’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is slightly lower at 61%.

Islanders Win and Under 6.5 Goals (+150, DraftKings Sportsbook)

The New York Islanders enter play at 25-10-4 on the season, which puts them in a dead heat for the top seed in the stacked East Division. They’ve gone 6-4-0 in their last ten games, including wins in each of their last three games. Additionally, they’ve won each of their last three meetings with the Philadelphia Flyers, which includes the last two games played between the teams at Nassau Coliseum.

The Flyers, on the other hand, are just 3-5-2 in their last ten games and have lost two of their last three games, including a 3-2 contest against the Islanders on the road via shootout on April 3. The teams are trending in opposite directions and it’s likely the oddsmakers and projection model will ultimately get this one right.

If there’s been one constant when these teams face off, it’s the fact that both teams can find the back of the net:

  • 1/30/21 NYI @ PHI: 3-2 (PHI win)
  • 1/31/21 NYI @ PHI: 4-3 (PHI win in OT)
  • 3/18/21 PHI @ NYI: 4-3 (NYI win)
  • 3/20/21 PHI @ NYI: 6-1 (NYI win)
  • 3/22/21 NYI @ PHI: 2-1 (NYI win in OT)
  • 4/3/21 PHI @ NYI: 3-2 (NYI win in SO)

While the initial totals posted between the teams were high, with three of their first four totaling seven goals each, the scoring has dropped pretty dramatically in their last two meetings, both of which have come in Islanders victories. Philadelphia goalies Carter Hart and Brian Elliott have been better of late, and it stands to reason that while the total could go over 5.5 goals, it’s more likely the total will not cross the 6.5 goal mark.

Bets We Like With a Flyers Win

Flyers Win and Over 4.5 Goals (+220, DraftKings Sportsbook)

To be clear, it makes more sense to follow recent trends as well as zoom out to observe the macro trend developing in this Flyers/Islanders rivalry. After winning the first three matchups against the Islanders, Philadelphia has seen their overall play drop, due in part to subpar goaltending through a large stretch of the season. If Philadelphia is to have any chance at victory whatsoever, it’s going to have to come by way of a strong effort in their defensive zone with even stronger play in net.

Carter Hart was pretty solid in his first game after being taken out of the lineup for a week to work on technique with goalie coach Kim Dillabaugh, allowing just two goals on 24 shots, while also stopping each of the Islanders’ first three attempts in the shootout. Even his performance against Boston was relatively positive, stopping 22 of 25 shots, a far cry from a three-game stretch that saw him allow five goals per game prior to his shutdown.

Brian Elliott has put in respectable efforts his own this season against the Islanders, stopping 33 of 36 shots in a win on January 31 and allowing just two goals in an OT loss on March 22.

Despite their strong play, it’s worth noting that the total goals have gone over 4.5 in five of the teams’ six contests this season. The Islanders have seen the over 4.5 total goals line in two of their last three games and four of their last six games overall. Philadelphia, meanwhile, as seen the total goals go over 4.5. in each of their last five games.

If you’re planning on a Flyers moneyline bet, adding over 4.5 goals is a respectable way to up your potential payout.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Anthony Beauvillier to Score a Goal Anytime (+210, BetMGM)

Anthony Beauvillier is having far from a lights-out scoring season, but he’s capitalized in his games against the Flyers. After being held scoreless in the March 18 meeting, Beauvillier rebounded to score a goal in each of the next two games, helping the Islanders win two of three games in the March miniseries played between the teams. In the April 3 contest, Beauvillier lit the lamp twice on just three shots, bringing his total to four goals in his last three games against the Orange & Black. When a guy has netted half of his season’s goals against one team, it’s safe to assume he’s got confidence against the squad.

Getting in on this hot trend at +210 odds is definitely worth taking a flier on.

Any Player to Score 2+ Goals (+125, FOX Bet)

On the surface, picking any player to score two goals in the seventh game of a rivalry series might seem farfetched, but the trend has held consistently this season. After not hitting in the teams’ first meeting, a player has lit the lamp at least twice in four of the last five games between these teams:

  • 1/31/21: Joel Farabee (3 goals)
  • 3/18/21: Oskar Lindblom (2 goals)
  • 3/20/21: Casey Cizikas (2 goals)
  • 3/22/21: None
  • 4/3/21: Anthony Beauvillier (2 goals)

If you’re looking for a worthwhile market independent of outcome, this one could be worth a look.

Flyers vs. Islanders Prediction

Pick: The Islanders and Flyers have each won three contests apiece in this head-to-head matchup. The recent trends indicate a high likelihood that New York will pick up their fourth consecutive win overall as well as their fourth straight against the Orange & Black. Take the Islanders to Win and Under 6.5 Goals. Also, get in on Anthony Beauvillier to score a goal.
