Philadelphia and New York are two teams heading in different directions. After starting their season with plenty of promise and aspirations of finishing as one of the Top-2 seeds in the East Division, the Flyers saw a COVID break disrupt their season in a way that has had massive ramifications. The month of March saw the team tumble down the standings, eventually putting them in the position of being on the outside looking in at postseason contention. Their 3-4-3 record over their last ten games has further dropped them to sixth in the standings, while the New York Rangers’ 6-2-2 stretch has lifted them to fifth place with an outside shot at making the playoffs.

Tonight’s matchup will see Brian Elliott get the start in net for the Orange & Black, while Igor Shesterkin will be in net for the Blueshirts. Elliott has struggled mightily against the Rangers this season posting his second-lowest save percentage (.842) and second-worst goals against average (3.90). Sheshterkin, on the other hand, has been stellar for the Rangers, positing a .925 SV% and a 3.06 GAA. The interesting thing to note about this goalie matchup is that despite having better numbers, Sheshterkin is 1-2-0 against the Flyers, while Elliott has gone 2-1-0 in four games against New York this season.

Bets We Like With a Rangers Win

Money Puck gives the Rangers a 59.9% chance of winning this game. Meanwhile, New York’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is slightly higher at 61%.

Rangers Win and Over 5.5 Goals (+148, DraftKings Sportsbook)

The New York Rangers have had a number of back-and-forth contests with the Philadelphia Flyers through six meetings this season. They won the first game between the teams 3-2 via shootout on February 18, before the Flyers returned the favor with a 4-3 regulation win a week later. After Philadelphia dealt New York a 5-4 OT loss at Madison Square Garden, something changed in the Blueshirts. The Rangers blew out the Flyers 9-0 two days later, a crushing defeat that signaled real trouble for the Orange & Black. One week later, they followed it up with an embarassing 8-3 triumph at Wells Fargo Center. To Philadelphia’s credit, they earned a 2-1 regulation win two days later, but from the macro view, it’s hard to see a path to victory for Philadelphia in this one. The lone advantage the Flyers could have felt good about was getting some much-needed time off given their COVID-condensed schedule, but New York hasn’t played since Sunday, either, and will have home ice advantage. Plus, New York has won their last six night games at MSG after suffering a road loss, which they did on Sunday in a 6-1 defeat against the New York Islanders

As for the total goals, things get a bit tricky. A number of trends point toward a high-scoring contest. The total goals line has gone over in New York’s lasts eight games at MSG following a road loss. Four of the six meetings between the teams this season have gone over 6.5 goals, which can be had with a Rangers moneyline bet at +210 odds, but we’d recommend hedging a full goal down to 5.5 and taking the over. The Flyers have seemingly tightened things up a bit defensively with two of their last three games against playoff-bound teams going under 3.5 total goals.

Going back to the goalies in this one, while Brian Elliott has struggled against the Rangers, some of the crooked numbers have come via blowout losses that have featured horrible overall efforts from the team, not the goalie himself, while Igor Sheshterkin has been an absolute stud in net all season for New York.

Rangers Win and Mika Zibanejad to Score a Goal (+200, FOX Bet)

There might not be a better same-game parlay to wager on than this one. When it comes to elite goalscorers, Mika Zibanejad had been trending higher and higher on the league’s list entering this season. However, he’s had some rather lengthy goal droughts this season, which is why he’s only deposited 16 pucks in the back of the net. When you look at who he’s scored those goals against, however, it’s clear he’s found something he likes about taking on the Flyers. Zibanejad has beaten Philadelphia netminders seven times this season and has amassed 15 points in six games against the Orange & Black this season. The best part of his play against the Flyers is that all seven of those goals have come in the last three meetings between the teams, only one of which came at Madison Square Garden. If you’re looking for a same-game parlay with solid value, look no further.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Mika Zibanejad to Record 2+ Points (+205, DraftKings Sportsbook)

If you’re interested in the aforementioned scoring trend of Zibanejad against the Flyers, but want a wager independent of outcome, this one could be worth a look. Not only has Mika Zibanejad scored nearly half of his goals this season in his last three games against the Flyers, but he’s been a playmaker as well. His eight assists in just six games against Philadelphia are a season-high against any opponent. In addition to his pair of six-point games against Philadelphia on March 17 and March 25, Zibanejad had a two-assist performance back on February 24 in Philadelphia. As for recent trends, Zibanejad has recorded multiple points in two of his last three games overall.

Flyers vs. Rangers Prediction

Pick: We expect Philadelphia’s recent trend of lower-scoring games to buck the ridiculously high-scoring trend that has developed through most of the meetings between the teams this year. Still, goals will be scored and the Rangers should continue to see their playoff hopes live to see another day. Take the Rangers to Win and Over 5.5 Goals.
