Will a HR Derby contestant hit a home run?  –  Yes (DraftKings Sportsbook +175)

Granted, only five of last night’s eight derby contestants will be a part of the All-Star Game tonight, with only Shohei Ohtani and Salvador Perez slated to start, but this prop has an enticing aura surrounding it.

Paying nearly 2:1 in a notoriously hitter-friendly park in a game with a total set at 11 runs, this prop will have a chance simply because of location alone. There are bound to be a couple balls that leave the yard tonight, so how can it be one of our five guys that send one out?

One of the two derby contestant starters tonight is the AL MVP frontrunner who will bat first as designated hitter, while also starting the game as pitcher for the American League. After a rough go of it last night in the Home Run Derby, getting eliminated in the first round as the odds-on favorite, wouldn’t it be fitting for Ohtani to lead the game off with a home run?

After all, the National League’s starting pitcher, Max Scherzer, has already allowed 15 long balls this season, on pace for potentially his most given up in a season, and tied for the 12th most in MLB.

Even if Ohtani can’t start the night off with that piece of magic, batting first and playing DH gives him the best shot to get a second at-bat. You would expect him to be given that honor, as he has surfaced as the sudden face of the league this season and is a tremendous lift to the sport’s international appeal.

Beyond that, your other starter who took part in last night’s event is Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez.  He had one of the most impressive displays in the first round last night but was unlucky to face Pete Alonso in his matchup, meaning his 27 home runs counted for little in the end.

It did give him some practice in a park in which he’s barely played and leaves him relatively fresh for tonight’s game. He also only has one other catcher on the roster, Tampa Bay’s Mike Zunino, so Perez is likely to play close to, if not more than, half of tonight’s game, meaning a couple trips to the plate.

With the power bats from the derby of Juan Soto, Matt Olson, and Joey Gallo all coming off the bench, we will have a few more shots at cashing this prop even if Ohtani and Perez can’t get it done. All three of those guys will surely carry a touch of frustration into tonight after the way each was eliminated from the Home Run Derby and could take that disappointment out on a baseball tonight.

Will there be a triple? – Yes (DraftKings Sportsbook +110)

Did you know that six of the 19 players that have three or more triples this season are playing in tonight’s game? That’s right, Shohei Ohtani, Adam Frazier, J.D. Martinez, Jake Cronenworth, Cedric Mullins, and Chris Taylor have combined for 20 triples thus far this season. Ohtani, Frazier, and Mullins will all start the game tonight, giving them a favorable chance at multiple at-bats, as well.

Coors Field is also a good park to compensate for the 9 percent increase in distance the ball travels at more than a mile above sea level. With the power alleys going 390 feet and 375 feet and a center field fence 415 feet away, there are lots of spaces for a line drive to turn into three bases.

Coors Field is regularly rated as the most hitter-friendly park in the league by the numbers and this season is proving no different. The Rockies home field has the highest park factor for runs of any regular ballpark in the league this season. Park factor compares the likelihood of events at home compared to on the road and also shows Coors Field as the third-most likely regular ballpark for triples this season with a dramatic 1.613 park factor value.

In a game featuring plenty of speed, a big ballpark, relay pairings unaccustomed to one another, and guys more likely to take a risk on an extra bag, we have to take a chance that someone will find three bags off the bat at least once tonight.

Will There Be a Score in the First Inning? – Yes (DraftKings Sportsbook -140)

With Ohtani leading off the game after last night’s disappointment, we are hoping for some early magic against the NL starter, Max Scherzer, who allowed a grand slam to a relief pitcher in his last outing. Hitting behind Ohtani are some major guns, all capable of big things at the plate in the first inning. With AL MVP candidate Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hitting second, followed by Xander Bogaerts, and Aaron Judge, the American League could easily break through against Scherzer, despite his first inning success this season.

If the American League is unable to push a run across in the top of the first, the National League will have a solid chance to cash this prop for us. They will be facing Ohtani, who will get the start for the AL. Ohtani had a rough night last night and could potentially have a rough first at-bat against Scherzer in this particular scenario. He could step on the rubber in his own head a bit, if so, setting the National League up for a potentially productive bottom of the first at the plate.

Ohtani has had a rough time in the first inning of games this season, posting his worst ERA of any inning in the first (9.95). He has issued 15 walks in 12.2 first innings pitched this season, as well. Across his brief pitching career in MLB, Ohtani has produced a 7.99 ERA in first innings, allowing 23 bases on balls in 23.2 first innings pitched.

He will be facing Fernando Tatis, Jr. (T-38 in walks), Max Muncy (T-4), Nolan Arenado (T-87), and Freddie Freeman (T-6), so free passes could certainly be part of the equation right out of the gate for the Angels’ star. Ohtani has allowed at least one run in eight straight starts, so an early concession tonight would be far from shocking.
