Howie Roseman went on 94 WIP this morning.

He was asked about Jalen Hurts, and with the benefit of hindsight, would he have used a second round pick on him if he could do it all over again?

Howie:

“We loved Carson, but we played four playoff games, and we’ve needed our backup quarterback for all of them. It’s too important of a position not to have that. I think that just thinking about where we were at the moment, and I think it was the right thing to do. It’s a hard decision, but it was the right thing to do.”

Howie is wrong here. They actually played six playoff games over those three seasons, and Wentz only started the Seahawks game, which he left with a concussion. Nick Foles started the other five games.

We’ve been over this before. Obviously the Eagles place a lot of value in the backup quarterback spot. Their attention to that position is one of the key reasons why they won a Super Bowl in 2018. Without bringing in Nick Foles, there is no Super Bowl.

But they didn’t need to draft a backup QB in the second round, not when other positions of dire need had to be addressed. The Birds took Hurts when they could have added Jeremy Chinn or Logan Wilson. Bunch of good dudes on the board, but they instead reached for Jalen Reagor then went backup QB and project linebacker in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. And it was clear they had zero plan for Hurts last year, running out these bullshit Taysom Hill looks and trying to force him onto the field to justify the selection. You undermined your franchise quarterback and created a dumb controversy out of nothing, just when Wentz had finally played himself out of Nick Foles’ shadow.

At the end of the day, they had to trade Wentz and eat the largest dead cap hit of all time. They fired the Super Bowl-winning coach. So even if Hurts goes on to become a franchise QB and Pro Bowler, it’s always going to be a dumb pick because of the circumstances that existed at the time.
