Six Finalists for Flyers Hall of Fame

Let’s get it back to hockey.

The Flyers Tuesday announced six finalists for the team’s Hall of Fame.

They are:

  • SIMON GAGNE – Career: 691 games played, 264 goals, 271 assists, 535 points
  • PAUL HOLMGREN – Career: 500 games played, 138 goals, 171 assists, 309 points
  • BOB KELLY –Career: 741 games played, 128 goals, 168 assists, 296 points
  • LOU NOLAN – Career: Public Relations (1967-72) & Public Address Announcer (1972-present)
  • MARK RECCHI – Career: 602 games played, 232 goals, 395 assists, 627 points
  • RICK TOCCHET – Career: 621 games played, 232 goals, 276 assists, 508 points

Did Gagne really play 691 games? I guess he did, huh? He was here for 10 years, so it all makes sense. I thought for sure Recchi and Tocchet had him beat, but I guess they didn’t play as many games during their second stints with the Flyers.

Here’s how the selection goes down, from the team website:

A nominating committee selected the six finalists, and now, a voting committee comprised of current Flyers Hall of Fame members, Flyers alumni, members of the Flyers front office, broadcasters, and members of the Philadelphia chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) will vote to decide which individual(s) will be enshrined in the rafters of Wells Fargo Center. The voting committee is not limited to selecting only one inductee.

The Flyers actually have not added anyone to the Hall of Fame since 2016, when Jimmy Watson went in. Rod Brind’Amour and Eric Desjardins were inducted in 2015.

Couple of random thoughts here:

  1. I can’t believe The Hound is not already in the HOF.
  2. Recchi in the Flyers HOF feels a little weird considering he won three Cups with other teams (Penguins, Canes, Bruins).
  3. Lou Nolan should be in, of course.
  4. You could make a compelling case for all of these guys. Who do you leave out?
  5. Bob Kelly should be inducted by FOX 29’s Bob Kelly.

Go Flyers.
