Flyers-Hurricanes Preview

The Flyers better figure out how to score more goals soon, or else they are going to let this drought take them right out of playoff contention. The Flyers have scored just 21 goals in the last 13 games. Because of their goaltending alone they’ve been able to stay afloat in those games, going 5-5-3 despite averaging just 1.6 goals scored per game.

Not much changed Wednesday when they lost in overtime 2-1 to Florida. Martin Jones was sensational in goal, making 43 saves and helping the Flyers steal a point. But, aside from an early goal from Joel Farabee, the Flyers offense was dormant.

The Flyers schedule has been a gauntlet of late. In their last 11 games, including today, the Flyers opponents have a combined record of 129-47-28, or a points percentage of .701.

As for Carolina, they might be a little vulnerable, coming into the game on their first losing streak of the season – albeit just two games. They lost a road game in Seattle Wednesday 2-1, then had to fly cross-country on Thanksgiving to play this afternoon in Philadelphia.

They haven’t been an offensive juggernaut either, and have scored two goals or fewer in seven of their last 11 games (7-3-1), but they do have 27 total goals in that span, meaning they have shown time and again that they can break out offensively.

This is the end of a six-game road trip for the Hurricanes and it should be a goaltender duel between Philadelphia’s Carter Hart (2.39; .938) and Carolina’s Frederik Andersen (1.90; .936).

One thing about the Flyers, they have a hard time coming from behind in games, because of their lack of scoring. If Carolina can get out in front early, they’re more likely to win the game. The Hurricanes are 7-1-0 when leading after one period and are 8-2-1 when scoring the first goal. Conversely, the Flyers are just 1-4-1 when trailing after the first period and are 2-6-1 when allowing the first goal. Couple this with the fact that the favorite has won the first period in the last three games between these two teams at the Wells Fargo Center, and it’s kind of a slam dunk to bet the Hurricanes here, no?

Look, the Flyers need depth scoring in the worst way. In their last 10 games, their leading goal scorer has been Derick Brassard (3), and he missed the last game with an injury and likely won’t play again today. Aside from that, the only other players with more than one goal in the last 10 are Farabee and Giroux, who have two each.

So, if the Flyers are going to win this game, they’re going to need production from somewhere else. Laughton’s odds are nice and valuable, and he hasn’t scored in a few weeks, so why not. Give it a roll.

Seven of Carolina’s last eight games against the Flyers coming off a road loss have gone under the total. The last time these two teams played, they were under 5.5 goals. In fact, 10 of the Flyers last 13 games have been under 5.5 goals. How can you not bet the under in this one?

Flyers vs. Hurricanes Prediction

The Flyers need a win in the worst way. They’re going to try and come out against Carolina and defend their zone like it’s the Alamo. They’re going to lean on Carter Hart to be sensational. And they’ll try to capitalize on opportunities when they can – check that, if they can. Still, until we se they can actually score more than a couple goals in a game, it’s hard to pick the Flyers at all. Maybe once they win one we don’t expect. Until then…

Prediction: Hurricanes 3, Flyers 2 (SO)
