The Giants canned Jason Garrett on Tuesday, which means a promotion for Senior Offensive Assistant Freddie Kitchens. The former Browns head coach will be calling plays this Sunday in The Meadowlands, and Nick Sirianni was asked how the Eagles plan for that:

“You have to go back and look at some things that Coach Kitchens did at Cleveland and some of those things like that. Of course, you look for every advantage, every edge, some of the tendency things. You got to go back and look at what they had.

I’ve said this before in here, it’s a different play-caller. There’s going to be different looks. There’s going to be different things that he does, that Coach Garrett didn’t do or vice versa.

We’ve just got to be ready for everything. So, when you don’t know exactly what you’re going to get, you got to play your rules and you got to play your rules on each individual defense that you get.”

Kitchens was a one-and-done coach in Cleveland. Weird tenure for him there. He was originally brought in to be the running backs coach, but when Hue Jackson was fired midway through the 2018 season, they promoted him to offensive coordinator under Gregg Williams. They finished the rest of that season 5-3 and Kitchens got the full-time gig in 2019, but was fired after the Browns went 6-10.

During the second half of the 2018 season, the Browns averaged 23.7 points per game. It didn’t translate to 2019 for whatever reason. They only mustered 340 yards per game (22nd) and 22.9 points (also 22nd). Baker Mayfield’s completion percentage dropped sharply and he threw a career-high 21 interceptions.

For what it’s worth, Kitchens did step in for Garrett once last season, when the latter was out due to COVID. They played the Browns and lost 20-6 in a game where Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley were both out. It was a Colt McCoy and Alfred Morris/Wayne Gallman game, and the G Men ended up throwing the ball 32 times while running it 21 times. A 60/40 pass/run split.

We’ll see what happens Sunday. Freddie Kitchens isn’t a guy who strikes fear in your heart, but with Garrett out, maybe the players come out motivated and give the Eagles a tough game.
