Flyers-Devils Preview

The Flyers snapped a 16-game drought in which they had scored three goals or fewer when they scored five times against Colorado on Monday. However, that was still two too few, as they fell to the Avalanche 7-5. The Flyers have now been outscored 44-18 in their nine-game losing streak.

Defense and goaltending, something that was a key to early-season success, has completely abandoned the Flyers lately. They are getting torched on the scoreboard and giving up shots as well. The Flyers have allowed 332 shots on goal during this losing skid, an average of 36.9 per game.

The goalies, who were on fire early, have plummeted back to earth and neither Carter Hart nor Martin Jones are currently posting good numbers. Hart will get the nod tonight. He was yanked in his last start after allowing five goals on just 15 shots. He also allowed four on 28 shots against the Rangers and six on 35 shots against Carolina in his previous two starts, giving him an .810 save percentage in his last three outings.

Derick Brassard returns to the lineup for the Flyers after missing six games.

Meanwhile, the Devils are mired in a slump as well. They are 2-6-3 in their last 11 games, and have dropped four straight (0-3-1) since beating the Flyers. In those four games the Devils have been outscored 21-10.

The Devils’ young and up-and-coming star got off to a fast start this season. He scored a pair of goals in New Jersey’s season-opening win over Chicago, and then had an assist and was playing well in their second game against Seattle when he suffered a dislocated left shoulder. Hughes would then miss six weeks, before returning to action on Nov. 30. He’s been playing catchup and has only played four games since. He did score a goal against Winnipeg and has been playing better with each game. Look for Hughes to break through against the Flyers, and if he does, it could go a long way toward leading his team to victory.

Atkinson showed a little bit of his warrior mentality in Monday’s loss to Colorado. He blocked a couple shots, one that had him skate to the tunnel and miss almost the entire second period. He returned in the third period and scored a goal. Despite getting x-rays taken on his foot/ankle, Atkinson is staying in the lineup tonight against New Jersey, a team he tortures. He has scored at least one goal in five of his last six games against the Devils and has scored more goals in his career against New Jersey (12) than any other team except Detroit (17), the New York Islanders (14) and the Flyers (13). Atkinson is also a streaky goal scorer and has goals in his last two games. Seven of his nine goals this season have come as part of a consecutive game scoring streak.

Each of these teams is allowing close to five goals per game of late. Both vow to be better defensively, and maybe so, but the odds of both teams suddenly figuring it out defensively in the same game? Doubtful. Flyers vs. Devils Prediction

The Flyers at least played competitively against Colorado, showing a couple signs of life. Their power play has seemed to get a little better as well. The Devils hung tough in a home shootout loss to Ottawa Monday but had their doors blown off in four of the previous five games. We expect this one to be close, but not tight – meaning it should have a decent amount of scoring. We think the Flyers finally break through, although it won’t be easy.

Prediction: Flyers 4, Devils 3 (OT)
