On Monday night, the Philadelphia Flyers (13-17-7) will try to snap a seven-game losing streak when they make their first visit to UBS Arena and take on the New York Islanders (11-13-6). It’s the first of four meetings between the storied rivals this season. A game between the two teams originally scheduled for late November was postponed because of COVID-19. It was rescheduled for tomorrow in Philadelphia.

Let’s get into our Flyers vs. Islanders betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this January 17, 2022 matchup.

Flyers-Islanders Preview

The more things change around them, the more things stay the same for the Flyers.

The roster is getting healthier. They either are catching opponents with players out of the lineup, or are starting backup goalies. And if not, like Saturday against the Rangers, Philadelphia actually figured out how to overcome an early deficit and take the lead.

But, as has happened 18 times in the last 23 games, the Flyers found a way to continue to not win games. The current losing streak is seven. There were two losses in the seven-game point streak that preceded it, one which also doubles as part of this losing streak. And before that, there were 10 more losses in a row. The Flyers still remain ahead of both the New Jersey Devils and the Islanders in the Metropolitan Division standings, but they could fall behind the Devils tonight and the Islanders have a whopping seven games in hand.

It’s not a good time for the Flyers right now, although they are getting Rasmus Ristolainen back and will have almost every defenseman back in the lineup that they planned to start the season with (only Ryan Ellis remains out).

Martin Jones will get the start in net for the Flyers as Carter Hart is expected to start tomorrow’s game back in Philadelphia.

As for the Islanders, they have won three-of-four, but those four games are the only games they have played in the past 28 days. In that span they had eight games postponed because of COVID. In what was already a strange season that saw them play their first 13 games on the road while construction on their new arena was being completed, New York has had a most unusual schedule.

They are in the midst of playing 14-of-15 games at home, with tomorrow’s trip to Philadelphia their lone road game in that stretch, and –with their talent and playing style feel– they have the ability to climb back into the playoff race despite being 18 points out of the final spot at the moment.

They’ll need to take advantage of this generous stretch of games where they don’t have to leave home. Currently, they are not scheduled to get on a plane again until Feb. 23, and the last time was Dec. 14, although that can change once the NHL releases its revised February schedule. They are 4-1-1 so far, and six of the remaining nine games are against teams toward the bottom of the standings, including three with the Flyers.

Ilya Sorokin will be in net again for the Islanders. He was in net for all five of the Islanders wins over Philadelphia last season, becoming the first rookie goalie to beat the Flyers five times in one season.

This may seem like a long shot, and we admit, it likely is. But, think about it from this perspective – Parise has scored at least one goal in four of his last five games against the Flyers and checking lines have been productive offensively against the Flyers this season. Especially teams that play a bigger and heavier brand of hockey. Teams like Anaheim, Los Angeles and Boston have seen this especially. The Islanders are no different. We’re not certain the Flyers will match the will and desire of the Parise-J,G. Pageau-Oliver Wahlstrom line. The trio have only combined for 14 goals this season, and Parise only has one of them. But something in the way the Flyers have been playing of late screams third line goal to me, and with these odds, it’s worth the risk.

We’re not confident that the Flyers are going to win this game, but we do think they have a shot and we do believe they will keep the game very competitive. In fact, the Flyers have covered the puck line in 11 straight against the Islanders when playing at night and coming off a loss. This is a team the Flyers always play tough (and vice versa). New York is also missing key defenseman Ryan Pulock, who is in the COVID protocol, forward Kyle Palmieri, who is out with an injury, and coach Barry Trotz, who is the matchup mastermind, who will miss his third straight game while positive for COVID.  It’s a chance for the Flyers to steal one, and if not, and they lose a one-goal game, something they’ve done in their last three contests, you go home a winner.

The Flyers haven’t had a good start to a game in a while. They keep talking about how important it is – and it is – as their record when scoring first and not scoring first are polar opposites. They did play a solid 45 minutes against the Rangers on Saturday before choking the game away in a New York minute, but that could be the sign of a team ready to bust out of its slump – not to mention, they do play the Islanders tight. Always have. We think this is a worthwhile risk because of the good odds you can get at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Flyers vs. Islanders Prediction

As bad as the Flyers have been lately, we are expecting an entertaining hockey game. We almost told you to bang the OVER in this one as well, because we think it can be one of those high-energy games with a lot of transition between teams who are familiar with each other, but haven’t seen each other in quite a while, leading to more goals. And, we think the Flyers steal one – and it’ll be about time.

Prediction: Flyers 5, Islanders 4 (OT)
