On Thursday night, the woefully undermanned Philadelphia Flyers (13-14-6) will have a tall task as they try to stop a three-game losing streak when they host the red hot Pittsburgh Penguins (19-8-5) at Wells Fargo Center. It’s the second of four meetings between the Metropolitan Division rivals. Pittsburgh defeated the Flyers 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 4. A game scheduled between the teams on Dec. 23 was postponed because of COVID-19. It has not yet been rescheduled.

Let’s get into our Flyers vs. Penguins betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this January 6, 2022 matchup.

Flyers-Penguins Preview

We are stunned this game is even happening.

The Flyers are down nine players – seven regulars and two depth players, six of which are in the COVID protocol. None of the six players have any symptoms. They are Claude Giroux, Travis Konecny, Ivan Provorov, Travis Sanheim, Nick Seeler and Jackson Cates.

Add in injuries to Sean Couturier, Ryan Ellis and Nate Thompson and the Flyers will be dressing a mostly AHL lineup tonight against a Penguins team that is on fire, having won nine straight.

This is as lopsided a matchup as the odds would indicate. As such, there’s not going to be too much to this betting preview today. It’s going to be the Penguins winning easy. We will do our best to find some props though that could pay some dividends for you.

Obviously, the Penguins are a heavy favorite, so if you want to get the odds in your favor, you’re going to need to play with the spread a little. This one isn’t too ridiculous. With the way the Penguins are scoring goals, and with the high volume of shots on goal they produce, and as relentless as their forecheck is against a normal NHL defense, never mind one that will have only two of the normal starting six defensemen in the lineup, it’s hard to imagine they won’t get a ton of chances to score and score at least three goals and then maybe an empty netter to cover the spread? Or it could be even worse. This game could be 5-1, or 6-1. Heck, giving the Flyers one is generous tonight. Take the Penguins to win, but if you want to make some money, push the spread and get some value.

We don’t think the Flyers are going to win at all. If they have any chance at all, Hart will need a Herculean performance in goal and will likely have to shut out the Penguins, or at most allow one goal for his team to have a chance to win. But, regardless of the Flyers winning or not, Hart is going to face a lot of shots. He’s better the more shots he faces too, so that’s a plus for the Flyers, but we can see Pittsburgh topping 40 shots easy in this game, so Hart, unless he’s blown out and yanked, should get 31 saves easy.

Yes, Bryan Rust and Evan Rodrigues have been on fire for the Penguins in the goal scoring department. Rust has five goals in the last two games and Rodrigues has six in his last five games. But when it comes to playing the Flyers, especially in Philadelphia, there is one guy who always seems to score – and that’s Crosby.

In 77 career games against the Flyers, Crosby has 49 goals and 115 points. That’s crazy.

And he’s scored at least one goal in eight of the Penguins last nine games in Philadelphia.

His legacy will continue tonight. You can bet on it.

Flyers vs. Penguins Prediction

The only thing that could possibly save the Flyers from a complete and utter blowout here is the Penguins played last night and are going back-to-back with travel, something that has happened tot he Penguins twice already this year and they scored a total of four goals in the two games on the back end.

But, in neither instance were they facing a team this depleted and bereft of actual NHL talent. This should be a cakewalk for Pittsburgh.

Prediction: Penguins 4, Flyers 1
