Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni did their season-ending press conference on Wednesday.

Roseman was somewhat committal on bringing back Jalen Hurts as QB1, if you believe the words coming out of a GM’s mouth at a January 19th press conference. Then, later in the Zoom call, Sirianni was asked about the receiver group and went on a meandering response in which he identified Quez Watkins as the #2 and Jalen Reagor as the #3.

I transcribed most of it here:

“I feel really good about the wide receiver group as a whole. I think you have a number one guy in DeVonta Smith. I think he’s a #1 receiver and is continuing to get better. Why is he a #1 receiver? Because he can consistently win one-on-one. You can get the ball into his hands and he can make plays with the ball in his hands. Maybe on some short passes, he catches everything. His competitive nature. There aren’t a lot of true #1 receivers (blah blah blah).”

“And then I look at Quez Watkins, he’s our #2 wide receiver. He’s got big time speed, he has a knack to make plays (blah blah blah, didn’t get as many touches as he probably deserves but has big play ability)”

“Jalen Reagor, we want more production from Jalen Reagor. He has all of the talent do so. I like him in that #3 spot now, to be able to make plays. He has skill and talent. It’s our job as coaches to get that skill and talent out of him, so it produces on the field. It’s our job as coaches to put him in a position to succeed. That’s a two-way street. I’m not taking all of the blame or all of the credit, and Jalen needs to make the plays when the opportunity arises. But he does have extreme talent for what we’re considering a #3 receiver, so be able to make plays.”

Well that’s great. They used the 21st pick in the 2020 NFL draft on a #3 receiver who regressed in his second season. He caught two more passes for 100 fewer yards. He doubled his receiving touchdown total from one, to a grand total of two. He muffed a punt in the playoff game and dropped a possible game-winner in New York. He stunk up the joint whenever he was out there.

God willing, Jalen Reagor figures it out this summer and comes to camp looking like a NFL player, because right now he’s actively harming the team when he’s on the field.
