On Thursday night, the Sixers welcome the Los Angeles Lakers to the Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers played a terrible first half on Tuesday night, followed by a very good second half, all of which added up to an ultimately comfortable win over the New Orleans Pelicans (but sadly, not a cover). The Sixers seem stuck in sixth place in the Eastern Conference. The Lakers, darlings in the preseason, have been beset by injuries and underperformance and are 24-24.

Let’s get into our Sixers vs. Lakers betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this January 27, 2022 matchup.

Sixers vs. Lakers Betting Pick (January 27, 2022)

Looking at teams on basketball-reference.com in preparation for putting these pieces together is always informative and interesting. As far as the 2021-2022 Lakers are concerned, it tells you all you need to know.

The names are huge names. LeBron James is, and by now this is basically beyond discussion, the greatest basketball player in the history of the NBA. Have the Michael Jordan debate amongst yourselves — James is better. At 37 years of age, James is averaging 29 points a game. That’s just ridiculous.

The problem for the Lakers is that James isn’t the only old guy on the roster, not even close. Carmelo Anthony is also 37 years old and has averaged 26 minutes per game in 45 games this season. That’s a lot of time for a player who has been one-dimensional for at least the last five seasons. Dwight Howard, 36 years old, is also on this team. Sixers fans are familiar with Howard’s limitations at this point in his career.

It continues. Wayne Ellington (pride of The Episcopal Academy) is 34 years old and has played almost 20 minutes a game in 31 appearances. DeAndre Jordan (33) is on this team. So is Trevor Ariza (36). This group looks a lot like it’s preparing for The Basketball Tournament.

And thus we come to Russell Westbrook, who is a relative kid at 32 on this team, but who has a ton of miles on him (991 career regular season games, 111 playoff games). Westbrook has received a lot of the blame for the Lakers’ woes this season, and that’s silly, because Westbrook is the same player in Los Angeles as he was in Washington, in Houston and in Oklahoma City: an over competitive, ball-dominant Alpha who shoots the ball poorly but never lacks confidence. It’s fair to say he has been a difficult fit with the Lakers; it’s not fair to say he is washed up or on the significant decline.

Anthony Davis is also relatively young, but if it makes sense to say it this way, he’s a pretty old 28. In 2018-2019, he missed 26 games. Last season, he missed 46 games.

James got another ring with this group in the bubble in the zombie summer of 2020, but as this group drifts at .500 this season and continues to age like shellfish in the sun, it will be interesting to see whether James sticks around in Los Angeles for the last year of his recent extension or whether this summer we will start to hear the “LeBron looking for a new challenge” rumblings again.

The Sixers are still without a few of their key reserves. Seth Curry and Shake Milton are out; Danny Green is questionable. The Lakers, however, are as healthy as they have been for most of the season. The Lakers have averaged 112.1 points per game in their past ten games and are 25th in the league in points per game against (112.3). Over feels like the play no matter who you like to win the game.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Joel Embiid Under 34.5 Points (-125, Caesars Sportsbook)

And here we are. Embiid’s hot streak has been fantastic, but this prop has now gone too far. Yes, Embiid has scored at least 38 points in his past four games. Before that, though, his game totals were: 32, 32, 25, 31, 31, 31, and 31. Bottom line: Embiid could have an excellent game here, like 32 and 14 with four blocks, and still miss this prop.

Korkmaz has strung two consecutive double-digit games together and now the books are trying to tempt you with over 12.5 points at even money. No thanks. In the prior five games, Korkmaz had no more than eight points in any of them. Posting two decent totals against a mediocre San Antonio Spurs team and an undermanned New Orleans Pelicans team doesn’t portend great success against this Lakers group.

Matisse Thybulle Over 6.5 Points (+100, FOX Bet)

Thybulle is nobody’s idea of a scorer, but against a team like the Lakers that turns the ball over a lot (14.9 turnovers per game, 5th-highest average in the league), Thybulle is probably good for one steal/breakaway dunk. So really, we’re just looking for him to get five other points from somewhere.

We rarely do this, but laying the points here is just too tricky. We aren’t saying -165 is a great return. We’re saying we trust the Sixers to win the game, but we don’t trust them to cover.

That said, if James doesn’t play, lay as many as eight points.
