On Tuesday night, the Sixers are back home after a one-night stand in San Antonio to begin a five-game homestand with tonight’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans. Since the end of their seven-game win streak on January 12, the Sixers are a pedestrian 4-3 with a couple of dicey losses thrown in there (home to Charlotte, home to the Clippers). They continue to cling to the last guaranteed playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Spurs are 18-28 and are two games out of the last playoff play-in spot in the Western Conference.

Let’s get into our Sixers vs. Pelicans betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this January 25, 2022 matchup.

Sixers vs. Pelicans Betting Pick (January 25, 2022)

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans? I do, and it’s a bummer.

Given the state of things, it’s a little gross to mourn what appears to be the end of paid business travel boondoggles, but here we are. I have been to New Orleans on four such paid business trips and each time I was both totally ready to leave when it was over and within a week I couldn’t wait to go back.

Mind you, I could never imagine living in New Orleans. The same identity that New Orleans has as a debauched, <<laissez les bon temps rouler>> tourist destination makes it the sort of place that doesn’t seem to be particularly conducive to living a stable life.

I also cannot imagine why an NBA player would want to live and work in New Orleans. The combined state and city tax rate for a player in New Orleans is 9.45%. Add in the Federal income tax rates and, no matter how much you’re earning, you’re taking home quite a bit less than you might have thought.

But it’s still an amazing city to visit. The food is great, the bars in the French Quarter are historic and fun, and as long as you can dodge some of the particular horrors of Bourbon Street (and, ahem, not walk back to your hotel on Poydras Street alone at 2:45 a.m.), it’s pretty can’t miss. If I had known the last time I was there that I might never be going back, I might have approached the trip a little differently.

This tangent is brought to you by the Pelicans’ injury report, because there is absolutely nothing interesting to say about this game. Zion Williamson is out with no timetable for his return. The Pelicans will also be missing Brandon Ingram, Devonte’ Graham, Jonas Valanciunas and Josh Hart tonight. And you’d ordinarily think that this means the Sixers are a gambling opportunity tonight, but then you remember that they lost to the Atlanta Hawks and the Los Angeles Clippers, at home, in similar set-ups in the past month.

The Pelicans will be without their four highest scorers (not counting Williamson, who hasn’t played this season) and are therefore down 68 points worth of their scoring average. The backups can make up some of that shortfall but probably not nearly all of it.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Joel Embiid Over 31.5 Points (-120, Caesars Sportsbook)

The books must hate putting this prop on the board night after night. Embiid hasn’t scored fewer than 32 points in his last five games, including a 50-spot and a 40-spot. He had 38 in Texas on Sunday night. The primary obstacle to Embiid getting 32 or more tonight is the possibility that he sits in the fourth quarter with the game well out of reach for the Pelicans. But that possibility is not a reason not to take this bet.

As long as Seth Curry, Danny Green and Shake Milton are out of action — and they’re all sidelined again tonight — Maxey will continue to get more minutes, more shots and presumably more points. All of those players were absent the past two games, and Maxey scored 19 against the Clippers and 18 against the Spurs.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker Over 18.5 Points (-118, FOX Bet)

The Pelicans will be running out a bunch of guys you may not be all that familiar with in this game, and in that spirit, let us introduce you to Nickeil Alexander-Walker. This Canadian Virginia Tech alum is averaging 12.7 points per game this season. Someone has to score points for the Pelicans tonight, and Alexander-Walker projects to play the most minutes at two guard tonight for the visitors.

Fool me three times, shame on me, I guess, but if the Sixers don’t cover this spread against this woefully undermanned opponent at home, it’ll mean they learned nothing from earlier failures in similar situations.
