On Wednesday night, the Sixers will take on the Washington Wizards at the Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers are currently the toast of the town. They went 12-3 in January, including a rousing overtime win on Monday night over the Memphis Grizzlies, which they accomplished with Joel Embiid catching a scheduled night’s rest. The Sixers have climbed to within a game of the Eastern Conference lead, currently held by the Miami Heat. The Wizards are going the other way, having lost seven of their last ten and fallen into 12th place in the Eastern Conference.

Let’s get into our Sixers vs. Wizards betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this February 2, 2022 matchup.

Sixers vs. Wizards Betting Pick (February 2, 2022)

We saw something on Monday night that it may be quite a long time before we ever see again. The Sixers forced overtime against the Grizzlies despite Embiid’s absence. It was a gutty, full-team-effort performance, and there was plenty to feel good about. The broadcast went to the standard commercial break you get at the end of regulation before overtime, and as the announce team yukked it up about the “free basketball” we were all about to be treated to — now THAT is a hacky cliche that needs to die — we found out something interesting.

Sixers coach Doc Rivers was hit with a technical foul at the end of regulation. The Grizzlies converted the free throw, and so when the ball was tossed for the beginning jump ball of overtime, the Sixers had found a way to trail by a point even before overtime began.

That the Sixers went on to win the game — after falling behind by as many as four points in the overtime — was sort of a perfect metaphor of what we are seeing with this Sixers team this season. They have now played 50 games without Ben Simmons, and it’s pretty apparent that they are going to play 82 games without him. They overcame a spate of COVID-19 absences early in the season that, if we’re being honest, probably cost them a few wins. A few of their losses have been inexcusable, but more of their wins (including Monday night) have been improbable and remarkable.

There is no way to tell how this is going to end. Maybe it’s best to just enjoy what’s happening and not think too much about the how’s and why’s.

The Wizards lost in Milwaukee last night and Bradley Beal will not play for the Wizards tonight. This is the last game of a pretty wretched three-game roadie for the Wizards which started in Memphis on Saturday. Grizzlies, Bucks, Sixers is a pretty nasty gauntlet. We trust the Sixers to score around 110 points without too much trouble, but we don’t trust the Wizards to break 100, at all.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Joel Embiid Over 32.5 Points (-120, Caesars Sportsbook)

Giving Embiid Monday night off meant a three-day rest for him, and that’s sort of a perfect respite in the middle of the season. It’s not long enough for Embiid to get rusty, and it’s not so short that Embiid didn’t get the benefit of some down time. Either way, given how amped Embiid was coming out of the locker room after his teammates won without him on Monday night, it’s not hard to imagine that Embiid will try to make up for his Monday absence by carrying a lot of the weight tonight.

Harris is playing very well lately, and his 31 points on Monday night fell perhaps unfairly into the category of “quiet.” Coming away from that game, you recalled Tyrese Maxey being seemingly everywhere the whole night and Andre Drummond having a night like the ones Shaquille O’Neal used to have in his prime. Harris was great too, though, even if it wasn’t flashy or memorable. Anyway, Embiid is back tonight, and there’s still only one ball on the court at any given time, so Harris will have a harder time finding his shots tonight. He’ll still be useful, he’s just not scoring 20.

Sixers Under 111.5 Points (+105, FOX Bet)

It’s not that the Sixers couldn’t score more than this. If you told the Sixers tonight that, for a win to count, they had to score at least 120 points, it’s probable that under that condition they’d find a way to do it. But the Wizards don’t project to push the Sixers to work very hard in this game, and if the starters are all watching the last five minutes with relative bemusement, there probably isn’t a path to much more than 110 points. Maybe not even that many.

So this is a lot of points, and the Sixers failed in spectacular fashion to cover this number four nights ago against the Sacramento Kings. But things move pretty fast in the Association. The Sixers are feeling pretty good about themselves right now, and with the schedule becoming a lot more difficult in the coming weeks, tonight is a night to put a bad team on its heels early and keep them there.
