Howie Roseman Commits Highway Robbery, Trades a First Round Pick for Future Assets
Howie does it again.
From Schefter:
TRADE: Eagles sending picks No. 16, No. 19 and No. 194 in the sixth round to the Saints in exchange for pick No. 18, No. 101 in the third round, No. 237 in the 7th round AND a 2023 first-round pick and 2024 second-round pick, per sources.
Saints now at 16, 19; Eagles at 15, 18.

We knew this was going to happen, right? The consensus was that there was no way the Eagles would use all three of these first round draft picks. Howie would finagle his way beyond this season and he did just that, picking up a future first and future second in the process.
It looks better when you write it out this way:
- Eagles get: #18 overall (1st rounder), #101 overall (3rd rounder), #237 overall (7th rounder), a 2023 first round pick, and a 2024 second round pick
- Saints get: #16 (1st rounder), #19 (first rounder), #194 (6th rounder)
It’s a great move that pushes things into the future and gives you flexibility to re-approach the quarterback topic after this season. I know it would have perhaps been exciting for the Eagles to draft three defensive starters, or two defensive guys and maybe a wide receiver, but this gives them the ability to make two first round selections and still push assets into next season and the season after that. There are better quarterback classes coming down the pike, much better than this Kenny Pickett/Malik Willis/etc class.
Also, betting on the Saints to be bad is a gamble worth taking. Drew Brees ain’t walking through that door in 2022 or 2023. Sean Payton moved on. This seems like a really shrewd move on paper. Howie does it again! Give him another contract extension!
If you set aside swapping Nos. 18 and 19 this year and moving down from 6th to 7th, the trade is:
No. 16 overall for a 2023 1st-rd pick, 2024 2nd-rd pick and No. 101 overall (end of 3rd round) this year.
