On Saturday night, the Sixers will be in Toronto for Game 4 of their first round NBA Playoffs series. The Sixers have won each of the first three games in the series and would like nothing better than to finish the series in four games and earn some needed rest in advance of the second round. The Raptors, conversely, are first focused on not getting swept in their own building. They can’t win four games in this series if they never win one.

The way it looks, this series isn’t going to last long enough to work up anything like real animus against the Toronto Raptors.
We have said this whole series that the Raptors are a team full of good-to-very good players that lacks anything resembling a superstar. Meanwhile, the Sixers have a superstar on the slight decline in James Harden and a megastar on the sharp ascendancy in Joel Embiid. There has been some buzz around how annoying Raptors coach Nick Nurse’s bitching at the referees has been, but then that’s any coach whose team is losing. Nurse isn’t anything new or special in that regard.
A sweep would be welcome on many fronts, but especially with reference to content involving the Raptors. There just isn’t a lot to say about the Raptors. They’re young, they play hard, they are pretty well coached…and that’s about it. They don’t have a special talent on the roster. They also don’t have any lightning rod personalities, or even sort of interesting personalities. They’re just sort of there. The most interesting thing the Raptors have done in the entire series is commit a bunch of borderline cheap shot fouls early in Game 3, and even that wasn’t especially compelling.
If the Raptors win Game 4, we’ll reconvene here to preview Game 5. If that does happen, let’s hope we have something interesting to discuss from Game 4. Because so far, this series has been only sort of competitive and, in too many ways, non-descript.

We think the Raptors are just about finished. Yes, that sounds obvious given the 0-3 hole that they are in, but it’s more than that. It’s not like the Raptors have been especially unlucky in this series so far. They were beaten pretty soundly in both of the first two games in the series, and they were the architects of their own downfall in Game 3 with so many missed free throws and empty trips late in the game. There is a nonzero chance that the Raptors lose this game by 20+ and don’t sniff 100 points.

We like this one quite a bit. Harris has embraced his supporting role behind Embiid, Harden and even to a degree Tyrese Maxey by using his length to clean up around the rim. Harris has 28 rebounds in the three games in the series and has had double digit rebounds in each of the past two games. Seven rebounds isn’t a given, but it’s super-attainable.

Anunoby has been Toronto’s most productive player in this series, which maybe isn’t saying a whole lot given that his team is a game from being swept out of the first round of the playoffs. Hard to blame Anunoby, though. He has scored at least 20 points in each of the first three games of this series and had 26 points in both Game 2 and Game 3. The Raptors don’t have a superstar, but Anunoby has looked like one in this series if you squinted hard enough.

“But that’s a Raptors line,” we hear you saying. Can’t argue with you. This line should rightfully be Sixers -5 or even -6. The Sixers have won the first three games of the series, two of them quite comfortably, and certainly did not lack intensity on Wednesday night. The Raptors are almost down to the “playing for pride” motivation, such is the depth of the hole they are in. We don’t know why the line isn’t bigger, either. We just don’t think the Raptors as constructed have enough to win this game, especially if they get down early.
