One of the things we were asking is how the Eagles were going to structure James Bradberry’s contract to navigate the salary cap this season.

In news that should not come as a surprise, Howie Roseman did his void year thing, according to Field Yates:

Howie Roseman has been doing this probably more than any other general manager in the NFL. The Saints like this approach also. People often say “how is this allowed?” or “what is the point of the salary cap?” but fail to realize that they are going to be paying every dollar of the guaranteed money at some point. You give yourself front-end flexibility while kicking the can down the road.

According to Over the Cap, the Eagles are eating dead cap hits on the following players who are no longer with the team:

  • Malik Jackson
  • Alshon Jeffery
  • Zach Ertz
  • Rodney McLeod
  • Joe Flacco
  • Eric Wilson
  • Steven Nelson
  • Ryan Kerrigan

What Howie does is finagle these contracts on the front end to get players in, then he spreads out the dead cap/void years to make them manageable and smaller hits down the line.

For an example of how the void years are typically arranged, use this Brandon Graham table from OTC:

Void years tacked on to give you front-end flex, and then you manage the back-end when the time comes. Howie is very smart with all of this. It also helps right now that they have Jalen Hurts on a rookie deal, and got off the Carson Wentz money, so right now he’s keeping the cap manageable.
