The Union play Atlas F.C. in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champion’s League quarterfinals on Wednesday night. They won the first leg 1-0 at home, then flew to Guadalajara on Monday and the person(s) running the Twitter account posted this (now deleted tweet):

At first glance, this looked like a pretty standard tweet, like a “hey we’re arriving at a new place so here’s a picture from the plane and picture from the bus.” Standard procedure really, but when you look closer at the first photo, it’s nothing but crappy and dilapidated houses. THEREFORE, people were offended because they thought the Union admin was suggesting that the entirety of the Jalisco region was some sort of shithole. There were replies showing the nice parts of Guadalajara, like “why didn’t you show this picture instead?” with myriad similar responses.

The funniest thing was Atlas fans replying with pictures of the shitty parts of Philadelphia, so the thread is full of Kensington references, like this one:

And this one:

I have to admit that I laughed at “Fentanilo Union.” Not to make light of a serious situation, but that’s some excellent wordplay and banter right there. The Liga MX fans are creative, so you gotta give em that.

Anyway, I don’t think the person(s) running the Union Twitter account are total racist(s). We’ll give ’em the benefit of the doubt that this was a brain fart and nothing sinister or malicious. If you wanna put ’em in jail, put ’em in jail.

What I can tell you right now is that both of these teams are playing utterly mediocre soccer. The Union got by 1-0 at home after Atlas committed two ridiculous school boy mistakes at Subaru Park. Then, on the weekend, I watched Atlas playing 11v9 against Juarez and they couldn’t even win the game. They couldn’t even score a friggin’ goal while playing with two-man advantage, so it ended in a 1-1 draw with three total red cards handed out. I lost $10 on a -180 bet, so it was that kind of night.

Bottom line is that the Union are very mid right now, Atlas is very mid, and Wednesday is gonna be a dog fight between two teams completely out of form. An instant classic, it will not be.
