Rumor: Cliff Lee Still Wants to Come Here

Here's something to brighten your day.

While Cliff Lee could be public enemy number one next week, he will more than likely be pitching against the Giants in the World Series and have this entire city rooting for him.

Well guess what?  And this one is full-fledged rumor, folks.  Lee may still want to try to come back to Philly next year.

ESPN's Jason Churchill reports that Lee may prefer Philadelphia over New York or Texas in free-agency.  And he speculates that it would take less money for the Phillies to sign him to a long-term contract.

Look, I know this sounds crazy.  Even with a discount the Phillies would have to free up a ton of money to bring someone like Lee here.  But hey, it's either this, or talk more about being down 3-1 in the NLCS to the Giants.

Just something to keep in the back of your head as you're watching him pitch in Game 7 or the World Series.

  1. Phils would probably have to deal Oswalt and/or Blanton to make room for under their self imposed salary cap. Would be kind of ironic wouldn’t it if they dealt Blanton to make room for Lee…when they could have just done that a year ago.

  2. But Jason Churchill is also the writer who, a couple weeks ago, reported the Phils may not pick up Rollins’s 2011 option when they already picked it up last December.

  3. Thanks I liked reading this….made me smile a bit after waking up and realizing the down 3-1 in NLCS isnt a dream…its a reality..ugh

  4. I’d love to see Lee back in Philly, but we need to be able to hit, which we seem to have trouble doing right now – there is no point having a good bullpen if you cannot back the pitchers up with runs.

  5. Halladay lee hamels oswalt, don’t score runs and u can still win 120 games… holy shit… the rotation would be tops in history of the game

  6. Well i think this is a crock of shit…. no way he would take a discount… everyone knows how the yankees work and if the phils offer say 20 mil for 5 years the yankees with go 25 for 6… they just go above and beyond to get the guy they want…. and you want to talk about staying positive then talk about reality and how WE have the best pitcher in baseball going tonight in a must win game that will bring the series back to CBP… dont shovel shit about some fabricated rumor bred out of fantasy…. COME ON BOYS LETS GO!!!!

  7. Adam, It has nothing to do with money and everything to do with how you feel in the organization. Lee felt that Philly was the best fit as far as overall connections go, and that’s something he most likely won’t get in New York.

  8. Why does everyone assume he’s all about the money? The guy is from Arkansas. I’m sure he’d gladly take 15MM a year instead of 23MM a year if he knew he had the chance to win a title every year. He’s a competitor.

  9. i can definitely see cliff as someone with a moral obligation against playing for the yankees. i think that about werth too but i have a feeling he’ll end up there next year

  10. lol greg but the yankees (who have a chance to win the title every year as well) would be the ones offering him 23m.

  11. I don’t doubt that Lee wants to come back to Philly. Most players have said they loved their time here. This is a nice, quick distraction from last nights game, but if Texas wins the WS or even goes to to the WS and I was Lee, I would sure have a hard time signing somewhere else. I have been a Phils phan since I was a twinkle in my fathers eye, but I am a realist too.
The fact that the Phils hitting has been problematic “since last year”, Charlie admitted it, would surely be a negative influence on Lee’s decision to sign in Philly.
I love the fact that Charlie is loyal to his players, but he needs to play small ball and make those type of calls or the Phils will be eliminated tonight.

  12. “Rumor Central has learned that, in a vacuum, Lee may prefer Philly over Texas, New York or any other city, and it may not necessarily take the most money to get him to sign long term.” – from ESPN Insider account I stole off of someone

  13. Even the Yankees have to have somewhat of a budget. And if they sign Lee, that means Burnett will be making about $17M a year next year to be a 5th starter. I think even their ownership has to swallow hard before making that decision. And I would think Texas would overpay to keep him if he pitches them to their first WS title.

  14. @ Kristoper Michael… I understand that Lee doesnt just look solely at money, but if that wasnt a main factor, then we never would have traded him b/c he asked for what the Phils execs thought was too much…. and just like the post from muscles @1232pm, ‘in a vacuum.” which i take as meaning removing all external components, one of which would be money.

  15. Does anyone have Cliff’s address? I’d like to send him a case of Yuengling in an attempt to remind him we all want him back. Badly.

  16. I would absolutely love to have Cliff Lee back on our team!! The Phillies should get rid of either JC Romero or Chad Durbin to free up money for Cliff. I hope he and the Rangers make it to the WS; I will be rooting for him!!

  17. An impressive share, I just given this onto a coaglleue who was doing a little analysis on this. And he in fact bought me breakfast because I found it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love reading more on this topic. If possible, as you become expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more details? It is highly helpful for me. Big thumb up for this blog post!
