What did they say about a town of beans?
Jon Heyman (@SI_JonHeyman), the writer who was all over the Lee story, reports that the Phillies are working on a deal that would send Joe Blanton to Boston.
Blanton will make $8.5 million each of the next two years, and the Phillies would love to get that $$$ off the books now that they are paying Cliff Lee $120 million.
So, it looks like Kyle Kendrick or Vance Worley for that fifth spot in the rotation. At this rate, we could just concede every fifth day and still be the best team in the league.
UPDATE: Gorden Edes of ESPN Boston reports that there is no deal in place yet.

Good luck Joe we may see you again in the WS if both our teams can stay on track. You arent losing much just head up north and continue to play on a winning team. Not the same red/blue but thanks for your innings and that awesome postseason HR a few years back!
Hmmm. Beckett, Dice K, Lester, Lackey, Bucholz…that’s 5 guys better than Blanton. Not even sure why Boston would do that unless 1 of these guys is hurt worse than I remember and/or they are going to move one of them. Or are one of the other 5 moving to bullpen.
And Wakefield is still there if he hasn’t retired. He can throw that knuckleball until he is 50 and be a 5th starter for somebody.
Farewell, Cheeseburger Joe. We appreciate you and will always regard you fondly. Hopefully you will be able to play for a contender.
I would honestly miss Heavy B if he goes. I’m probably one of few. But for the good of the cause, it’d be worth it.
I will miss him too. I love him and would be sad to see him not on the Phillies.
yeah, Joe did a good job. Good pitcher on our favorite team ever. 8.5 mil is a lot for a 5th starter, tho.
the doughboy was ok at best, just because he is leaving doesnt make him any better then he was when he was on the team, im glad to see him go because he just couldnt pitch a game without giving up 4 to 6 runs. I will always remember his homerun in the 2008 nlcs and the face he made that said “did i really hit a homerun? im so confused?!”
