Source Confirms Lee’s Wife Wanted No Part of New York, Lee Contacted Phils

A source told us that Kristen Lee wanted no part of going to New York.  And it was Lee who got back in touch with the Phillies over the weekend.

SI's Jon Heyman was all over the story.  He said, "hearing [Lee] wanted to be on Phillies so badly, he initated a lot of the talks."

Our source confirmed this via email and provided more insight:

The Cliff Lee wife story is true.  She absolutely did not want to go to New York, and she did not want to stay in Texas because all of Lee's relatives were coming to his games. That was getting old very quickly for her.

Apparently, Lee himself called Amaro Jr. on Saturday to ask what the Phillies best offer would be. They were five million apart and Amaro Jr. said he couldn't do it. He called Lee back on Sunday to say that he wasn't going to lose him over five million.

They are happy because they can get a house down at the Jersey shore for Kristen and the kids to stay in, and they like that they are only a short train ride from other big cities.

To confirm, the source provided details as to the specific connection with the Lees.

Nothing completely new, but it's apparent that Cliff Lee (and his wife) really wanted to come back here.

In the words of Angelo Cataldi…”They love us. They really love us. We’re adorable!”

  • Chris G December 14, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Off topic: Kristen Lee is cute as a button.
On topic: I’m glad we didn’t lose Lee over five million dollars. That would have been heartbreaking.

    I <3 the Lees. I <3 RAJ. I <3 the Phillies' owners. I <3 the Phillies.
Quick question about continuity here (not trying to be a buzz kill, just wondering)... we let go of Davy Lopes over what had to be at most $100,000/year I'd imagine, yet $5MM/year was no big deal for Lee? Strange. Only explanation is Lopes' damaged GGM (Good Guy Metric) by spilling the beans on Utley being hurt.

Thank You Mrs. Lee! Im sure your husband and our city will get more rings now…

  • Bob December 14, 2010 at 3:56 pm

You gotta love when a player puts comfort and familiarity in front of money….THAT’S A TRUE PLAYER! Love Lee and his family, the are well protected now.

  • Dave December 14, 2010 at 3:56 pm

I love how it’s national public news now that Kristen Lee didn’t want to be around Cliff’s relatives. Being around them was quickly getting old….lol. Have fun dealing with that!

  • missing patty o'burrell December 14, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Probably just the demands of relatives and friends of relatives and so on that she was talking about. I’m sure she loves Cliff’s family but you can just imagine how this cousin’s friend wants this and that step-mother once removed wants tickets for that. I’m sure she didn’t mean it in a mean way for his relatives. Yay for Kristen Lee!!

I love this man, and his wonderful family. You’re with the best fans in baseball now, Cliff, don’t you worry about a thing 😉

  • Cathy December 14, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Thank you Mrs. Lee and Cliff!! Welcome back to Philadelphia, Cliff!! We missed you very much and are THRILLED to death to have you back where, I think, you belong. Now we have 4 top notch pitchers in Lee, Halliday, Oswalt and Hamels. How much better can things get for Philly?

  • jessica flynn December 14, 2010 at 6:43 pm

We set him free — and he came back!
He chose the Phillies in spite of the $$$$$$$ decrease. — He is a real winner in every sense.
Thank U Cliff Lee……you were always in our <3,
and best wishes to Kristen and your luv-ly children!
    Welcome Home!.........Jessica Flynn

I almost don’t miss Jayson anymore. Welcome to Philly Cliff and family!

  • Mike December 14, 2010 at 7:50 pm

I read Cliff Lee and his wife have been together since 7th grade….true?

  • Max December 14, 2010 at 8:24 pm

We had him in Seattle for a while, and I knew he’d be out as soon a feasible. He is a winner and needs to be on a team that can score some runs and get some Series rings for and with Cilff while he’s in his prime.
Philly has a hell of a lineup now.

  • Kracker December 14, 2010 at 8:43 pm

  • DAVE December 15, 2010 at 3:28 am

Actually the Yankees are scouting some pitcher in upper Mongolia. Scouts rave that he’s as good as Kei Igawa.

  • Clay December 15, 2010 at 5:09 am

Well it looks like Lee’s balls are i squarely in Kristen’s purse.

  • Clay December 15, 2010 at 5:12 am

read Cliff Lee and his wife have been together since 7th grade….true?
Looks like Kristen just got out of 7th grade

  • Kevin December 15, 2010 at 11:43 am

This news article states…..“She absolutely did not want to go to New York, and she did not want to stay in Texas because all of Lee’s relatives were coming to his games. That was getting old very quickly for her.” She sounds like a diva to me. Congratulations to the Phillies but…be very nice to her. SHe wears the pants.

  • missing patty o'burrell December 15, 2010 at 1:18 pm

I don’t think she is a diva at all. When you are married it’s supposed to be a partnership. I say yea for her!
