Flyers Interested in Ray Emery?

What is in the water down at the sports complex? First Juan Castillo is named defensive coordinator, now the Flyers are interested in bringing back Ray Emery?

TSN's Darren Dreger:

At least three NHL teams have expressed interest in goaltender Ray Emery.

Sources have confirmed both the Anaheim Ducks and Philadelphia Flyers are in the mix as two of the three teams, however neither team is at a point where they're prepared to make an offer to sign the unrestricted free agent. Although, the expectation is teams will make their move on Emery within the next 48 hours.

Umm… is this really a risk worth taking?

Emery, who had hip surgery last year to correct avascular necrosis (the same bone disease that cost Bo Jackson his career), hasn't played in the NHL in over a year.

The goalie situation still remains a small question mark for the Flyers. Bob has never played a full season in the NHL -he appears to be very streaky- and while Bouche is an adequate backup, he is probably not the guy to win us a Stanley Cup. That being said, the goaltending situation has worked out just fine thus far, and adding the flamboyant Emery to the mix will only lead to more questions than answers.

Then again, like seemingly every other Philly athlete, he's friends with Snoop and he loves to hang out with Carts in Sea Isle (you haven't lived until you've seen Carts, Emery, Aaron Asham, and John Clark at Braca's)… soooo there's that.

  1. If this happens the only thing that would be missing is the Phils getting Billy Wagner back! WHAT THE FUCK!

  2. you’re all being way to negative about this, boosh is 34 and when he retires in a couple years who’s gonna be bob’s back up? having a goalie like emery fill that void would be a solid investment if he’s healthy, much more so than *gasp* leighton aka slower than molasses in january in the arctic circle. plus emery loves philly and probably wouldn’t ask for too much money to be a backup especially considering he knows that we’d be taking a risk by signing him and since we’d be graciously giving him a chance to get his career back. nothing wrong with adding more veteran depth especially in the goalie position.

  3. He’ll be a minor league goalie if anything. Remember when we brought back Boosh and he played with the Phantoms until we traded him to the Sharks? Same thing will happen IF they do sign him.

  4. A curious development. Now, I wouldn’t be adverse to Emery returning as a late season insurance policy in case “Bob” or Boucher stumble down the stretch, but that’s if, and I mean IF he’s healthy.
