The Funny Thing About Roy Oswalt’s Back, Jules

UPDATE! It was the weather. Read this.

… is that if might be hurt after all.

Lost in the collective boner of the Flyers' win, was the Phillies losing to the Diamondbacks, 7-5. Roy Oswalt struggled, giving up five runs in three innings.

After the game, he skipped out on the media session, leading some of the beat writers to wonder if his back, which he tweaked two starts ago, is still hurting: []

The pitcher had left Chase Field before reporters entered the visitors clubhouse. It was his second start since developing mid-back spasms in a game at Citizens Bank Park against Florida.

Ruben Amaro Jr. huddled with a team offical during the game and then was seen leaving the manager's office just as reporters entered.

Last week, Charlie Manuel denied that Jose Contreras was hurt. The next day, the Big Truck was placed in 15-day garage (these Big Truck analogies are never going to get old, never). Beat writer Randy Miller even went so far as to call Manuel a liar, and he's wonders if Charlie is doing the same thing here:

  1. I’m sure it’s hurting, and I’m sure Charlie “lied”. I’m not too worried about it though, they have enough aces to get by if one needs some time off. Just don’t put too many of them on the DL or we could be in trouble. It’s not like the hitting will carry the Phillies far. Maybe Ibanez could hurt his back? A guy can dream…

  2. From Utley to Lidge to Contreras and now, posssibly Oswalt? Every time someone from the Phillies says a player isn’t hurt, he inevitably winds up on the DL. I understand that as a member of the great unwashed masses (a.k.a. the fans), my access to information on injured players is strictly on a need to know basis (as in, I don’t need to know), but this sort of obstruction nonsense has gotten ridiculous. I don’t know if I’d outright call Uncle Charlie a liar like Miller did, but damn, you gotta wonder.

  3. Personal reasons? Well I guess Randy “no body knows who I am” Miller will find the scoop soon enough.

  4. Reports are that a tornado may have hit Oswalts hometown of Choctaw County, Miss….He was on the phone during a bullpen session meaning he probably got some news. He has left for personal reasons
