I’ll be honest, I don’t always read the Washington Post, but when I do, I prefer a Dos Equis always come away feeling that their columnists are wayyy more apologetic than Philly folks.

A few weeks ago, one writer said if Jayson Werth had only 19 more doubles, he’d be having a decent season. And on Friday, another wrote that signing Werth was akin to the Phillies 2003 signing of Jim Thome.

Today, manager Davey Johnson and columnist Thomas Boswell celebrated the Nationals’ victory in this weekend’s battle, which was fought in front of mostly Phillies fans: [Washington Post]

“You gotta sit back down,” chuckling Nats Manager Davey Johnson said of all those invading fans who had to flop back in their seats en masse when Ian Desmond hit the most difficult kind of comeback homer that’s possible in baseball — down to your last strike, nobody on base. He smoked a liner over the left-field wall (off Antonio Bastardo, 1.48 ERA) to tie it at 4.

“Kind of reminded me a little of ’86 [in the World Series] when the Red Sox were up on the front step [to celebrate] and then they started creeping back.”

Give Werth this. He’s performed at the level of a “replacement player” — an outfielder you could acquire almost cost-free — for five months. But he grinds. His single on an 11-pitch at-bat started Friday’s rally. His hit to left off Lidge on Sunday loaded the bases in the 10th and set the stage for the win.

Jesus. Settle down over there. You sound a lot like the St. Joes folks when they celebrate their quinquennial win against Villanova (ducks). The stadium was flooded with fans from baseball’s only 80+ win team, a fact that led Jonny Gomes to say to Ryan Howard, "You guys should give us your meal money."

You have a long way to go before feeling proud, Washington.

We could go on and on about why the Phillies will just shrug off their little bee sting from the Little Engine That Tried and move on to watch their beautiful steed take the mound – looking for his sixth shutout of the season – tonight in front of 45,000 plus… rather, we’ll just post the NL East standings:
