Your Heating Up Stove News: Phils Close with Madson, Have Hard On for Papelbon Too, and Raul Sleeps at Hall of Fame

Here’s something good, something bad, and something odd.

According the Jayson Stark and Ken Rosenthal, the Phillies are nearing a deal with Ryan Madson. [FOX Sports]

One major-league source said Monday night that the Phillies were working hard to keep Madson and possibly nearing an agreement.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro did not deny that a deal was close. But he did not confirm it, either.

“I do not characterize my negotiations,” Amaro said. “I need a closer. It’s no secret I need a closer.”

My God, Ruben Amaro is dripping superiority all over my laptop screen. I will not characterize my negotiations. Oh, OK, Rube.

No joke– I’d prefer rooting for Jose Reyes over Papelbon. Really, something about a guy who once danced to Dropkick Murphys in his underwear just rubs me the wrong way. I like to be rubbed the right way, which, in this case, is Madson.

In a scene straight out of Night at the Museum, Raul Ibanez and his son, Raul Jr., slept overnight at the Baseball Hall of Fame as part of a trip with Jr.’s Lower Merion Little League team. Pretty cool, actually.

  1. Pap would get raked pitching in CBP. All he has is a fastball. BTW it looks like Rauuul is protecting his son from getting Sanduskied in that pic

  2. IBM, you are correct sir. Dropkick isn’t worth the nicotine stain on Shane MacGowan’s single remaining tooth. However their shitty music does make it much easier to identify sluts at the bar, so kudos to them for that much.

  3. How about Papelbon setting up for Madson? We’ve seen closers go down with injuries (Mad Dog included), so why not have insurance on top of Bastardo? I don’t know that I would go Papelbon- probably Joe Nathan or Matt Capps, make it cheaper, but I’d like to see them sign a couple big time bullpen arms, have the 7th, 8th and 9th all completely locked down.

  4. Papelbon, no matter how much you dislike the guy or Boston, is still good, and Philly hasn’t really had that power arm for a while now. It would be nice to see both him and Madson, but if we can’t get Madson, I’d be very happy to have Papelbon.

  5. Why the hate for Papelbon? Have you been listening to too much Boston sports radio? Papelbon is a very good pitcher.
I guess this is setting up for an awful contract either way. Amaro always gets his guy. No matter what!

  6. I love Rauuuuuuuuuuuuuul. I’m going to miss him next year, but yea, the time has come to part company. 🙁

  7. Sunday we got up to a down-pour, and headed to the early service at our church. Our church has just completed a huge add on that has more than doubled the size of the church and it was the first Sunday in the new sanctuary. It was a beautiful service, and it was packed! After church we headed home to change since it was much cooler than expected, then we headed out to my parents and it rained the entire drive, thankfully nothing severe although we were a little late. We had a delicious lunch and then the kids had egg hunt #2. My mom has a huge basket of fake apples in her living room, and David always plays with them, instead of putting eggs in his basket, he loaded it up with apples.
