[Reposting this from December, the game is tonight at 4 p.m.]

This afternoon, in a move that was decidedly meta, the Philadelphia Wings spammed local media (look) on Twitter to tell them about their latest initiative PR stunt– Twitter names on jerseys.

Yes, that’s right, on February 12, all Wings players will use their Twitter handles on the backs of their jerseys. The Wings claim they will be the first American professional sports team to do this, and since we really don’t care to fact-check that statement, we’ll go with it.

Now, I don’t really have an opinion one way or the other – the stunt is for one game only and the jerseys will be auctioned off for charity – but I’d say it needs to be mandated that any sort of play-by-play for the game includes phrases like “(insert generic lacrosse name) @TrevorDoesaDirty pings @ZackMeHoff” and, when there is a particularly stellar connection, “ohhhh baby, a direct message from @GaryGait!” He still plays for the Wings, right? Also, I'm joking.

What I do have a problem with, however, is those awful designs. It's like Ed Hardy was outsourced to do costume design for the Little Mermaid stage production.

Your Twitter reactions, after the jump.
