Xavier Silas May Have Fractured His Skull and The Sixers Signed Kwame Brown Today

You want the bad news or the worse news first?

Let’s go with the worse news:

Sixers undrafted summer leaguer Xavier Silas suffered a serious head injury in the final game down in Orlando today.

Silas is at a local hospital with a concussion and possible frontal bone skull fracture after a collision with Solo Jones, who was going to block a shot. The team said Silas will undergo tests. We’ll update this post as more details become available.

Now, the bad news:

The Sixers have reportedly signed Kwame Brown to a two-year, $6 million deal (some reports say one-year with option for second) today. The 30-year-old center, who, in the last five years, has played for such powerhouses as the Grizzlies, Pistons, Bobcats and Warriors, averages 6.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. That’s as a 6’11, 270 lb big man.

Last season, Brown played in nine games for the Warriors, averaging 6.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per.

In 2006, Brown was investigated for rape. Charges were later dropped. In 2007, Brown threw a cake at a man, and was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and interfering with a police investigation after his cousin was pulled over for driving the opposite way on a one-way street.

via Bill Simmons' Facebook:

No fucking clue why the Sixers would pay Kwame Brown $6, let alone $6 million, but that’s what they’re going to do. Inexplicably, thus far, they have turned Elton Brand’s amnesty into Brown and Nick Young. I’m not sure those are the investments you were looking for. But your Twitter reactions are hilarious:

  1. Sixers just signed Theo Ratliff, Shawn Bradley & Dana Barros…holla

  2. what an absolute waste of 6 million dollars. this guy is trash. they should have just given that money to Iverson and brought him back.

  3. I would have signed him too if he played football. Fit right in with the other thugs.

  4. Adam Aron, just because he can throw down buckets of KFC doesnt mean he can throw down buckets on a court. Dumbest move by a “professional” ever

  5. I would have rather the Sixers signed B. Franklin Dogg as our starting center.

  6. BTW Kyle… Xavier Silas was on the Sixers roster at the end of last season and during the playoffs. Calling him an undrafted summer leaguer might be technically accurate but is also a bit misleading because it implies that he’s new to the team (even though pretty much no one knows who he is).

  7. Kwame Brown? Seriously? That bum isn’t worth SIX dollars, never mind six MILLION! My God! The Sixers really screwed the pooch with that boneheaded move!

  8. A lot of you must not watch basketball. I know the writer of this article is generally an idiot when it comes to Basketball, I guess the readers too.
Kwame Brown is not a bad off the bench guy. He gets crap for being a former number one pick, but really he is not that awful as a defensive big under the basket. When you just look at stats and don’t watch the game I guess it’s east to do that though

  9. @James Niggly: Kwame Brown didn’t register a block last year. How’s is that “not that awful?”

  10. HAHA Not only do you prove my point of not watching the games and just looking at stat sheets……. You even suck at doing that!

  11. I watch plenty of basketball and Brown isn’t worth that kind of money. And he was injured most of last season, something that should’ve been a red flag to the front office to have steered clear of the guy. If this is some half-assed reclamation project by Doug Collins who was Brown’s first head coach, then it’s waste of both time and money.

  12. JaVale McGee next?
Seriously, when did the Sixers become the team that picks up Wizards rejects.
And BillP: if you remember when he was 18 and had promise with Washington, you must be the one guy that was in attendance when he blocked an MJ dunk in a summer league game. Because that’s the only reason he was drafted #1.
Can’t think Doug Collins will finish out the season with the talent they are assembling.
    Thx,
    Jay!

  13. It makes me sick to see a guy that blows make this much money. Stealing money, and he is not ashamed of it. This cat has shown that he makes no effort to improve his profession. The media and funs should make this signing fun once the season starts.

  14. @James Niggly: You may want to take another peek at that stat sheet. Since the ’08-’09 season, Kwame Brown has netted himself .021 blocks/minute played.
In that same period, Elton, who is three inches shorter with busted knees, doubled that total with .042 block/minute, and Hawes, who inexplicably will be moved to Power Forward because of this shit signing, bested Brand’s total with .043 blk/min. Do some homework, holmes.
