In a way it’s good he’s not on the team bc we won’t have to root against him in the gold medal game against the US. And we get to root harder for a team that has Crosby and Carter. Fuck Canada

Ps Mikey Miss blocked me on twitter bc I was a flyers fan. Can we get this dickhead out of this city once and for all. I get Hockey isn’t the most popular sport here. But there’s a huge fan base and this idiot whose employers broadcast the games just puts down the team the sport and it’s fans on a daily basis

        Just like in 2010, right?

They have the goalie playing the best in the world right now (Miller). They have a prolific offense (enough so that, rightly or wrongly, Bobby Ryan was left off the team). They have a really good D, including the best defenseman in the game right now.

They’re not a lock to make it, but they’re one of the 4 teams with the best chance.

To say there is “no way” is crazy.

Dude come on, take off the American flag blinders. I’m a big team USA fan as well and there’s certainly a chance they make the gold medal game, but Ryan Miller the best goalie in the world? There’s no way he’s better than Rask, Carey Price, or even Ben Bishop right now for that matter. Yeah I get he plays on a terrible team, but someone like John Bernier is on a mediocre defensive team and he’s putting up numbers as good if not better than Miller.

          Reply
          • Cartman January 7, 2014 at 4:20 pm

I do think Miller is the best in the world right now. How many of those guys would still keep their composure and play that well in front of such an awful team?

It’s certainly debatable, but in watching what I have of Miller, I think he’s playing the best and I think he’ll show it in Sochi if given the chance (I guess they’re seriously considering Quick for the starter, but I think that’s a mistake).

Rask and Price play on teams that greatly reduce the stress of their position. Bishop is playing really well, I’ll grant you. He’d be in the conversation with Miller, as would Bernier. But Miller’s track record and performance this season, when many guys would give up or not play at such a stellar level, put him above them in my opinion. I mean, shit, dude faced 50 shots in a game and gave up 1 goal. That’s fucking impressive.

Can’t say I’m surprised by this, the Olympic selection process is a glorified popularity contest. He’ll probably be a reserve player and wind up playing anyway when another forward withdraws or is injured. On the flip side, the risk of the Flyers losing their captain/star in an Olympic game is gone and as a Flyer fan I can’t say that’s a bad thing. Gives him a break, then fresh legs for the stretch run to the playoffs after the break.

Most of Giroux’s points come on the power play. He’s not a good even-strength player and his two-way play is lacking. Not surprised he didn’t make it.

    Reply
    • Cartman January 7, 2014 at 12:51 pm

The fuck are you talking about?

Yeah he slumped at the start of the season, but he’s been amazing lately, and 16 of his 38 points are on the power play. So, not “most”.

And Giroux is one of the best two way players in the league.

      Reply
      • tone January 7, 2014 at 12:58 pm

His ratio of power play points to total points is one of the highest in the league. He had the worst +/- on the team up until a few weeks ago. As of 12/11/13, he was a -10 (the WORST on the team). Just because he’s been hot “lately” he should make the team? Get a clue.

        Reply
        • Whoops January 7, 2014 at 1:09 pm

So we are supposed to discount his great play of late and focus on his bad start and plus/minus (one of the most over rated stats in hockey)? Looks like you need to get a clue

          Reply
          • tone January 7, 2014 at 1:26 pm

In general, +/- does matter and it correlates to success. As a forward, a low +/- means your team sucks and your line is not scoring. During their evaluation they obviously had reasons why they left him off the roster. Face it, he’s just not as good as the other centers on the team.

        • Cartman January 7, 2014 at 1:22 pm

Can I get where you find that stat, the ratio of PP points to total points? I’ve never seen that anywhere, and I’d love to. I’m not trying to argue on that- I just want to see the list.

And +/- is a useless stat, but even if you want to use that, your numbers mean that he’s been a +12 in under a month of play. That’s fucking ridiculous. He’s one of the hottest players in the game right now, why wouldn’t you want that on a short-tournament team?

And it’s not just “lately.” Giroux has been a point per game player (or damn close) in the NHL for 4 years now. You’re taking his slow start and using to justify him as not good, I’m using 4 years of evidence, and somehow I’m the one who needs to get a clue? What works better, a 20 game sample size or a 225 game sample size?

And a lot of this is with the likes of Hartnell and Raffl on his lines. Can you imagine what he’d do on a line with Duschene and Sharp? Or Stamkos and Benn? Or any combination of Canadians?

          Reply
          • tone January 7, 2014 at 1:48 pm

That stat doesn’t exist anywhere…I calculated the ratio myself…PP points divided by total points…and compared it with the other top 50 scorers. I’m just saying it’s pretty difficult to make the Team Canada roster and we’ll never know what their decision was based on. Maybe they were just looking for more defensive center-men like Toews and Bergeron.

          • Russian +/- machine January 7, 2014 at 1:51 pm

Don’t discount +/- entirely. Yes it contingent on the team you’re on and your goaltending, etc but it can also indicate the type of player you are. Look at Ovechkin; worst defensive work ethic in the league, tops in scoring, awful +/- because of it.

          • Cartman January 7, 2014 at 2:18 pm

What would you consider “one of the highest” in the league, then? Since you went through the numbers. Because I’m going through them now, and players with a higher percentage of PP points to total points (all in top 50 in points):

Ovechkin, Malkin, Backstrom, Pavelski, Karlsson, Neal, Skinner, Subban.

So that puts Giroux at 9th. Out of 50. Or in the top 18 percent. That’s hardly “one of the highest” in the league. Especially when he’s a 42% and some of those guys are over 50%.

And yes, I know center was deep for Canada. But Giroux can play the wing, and would be a better option at it than Carter, Nash or Marleau.

        • Whoops January 7, 2014 at 1:55 pm

+/- is akin to “wins” in baseball. There are a lot of other factors that can affect your +/-, such as your role on the team. Are you a shut down player who consistently plays against the other teams top players. If you are facing tougher competition your +/- will be affected. Do you play the penalty kill? If the other team scores right as the power play expires you are saddled with a minus. Are you on the ice with the goalie pulled to try and tie a game late? If the other team gets an empty netter you get a minus. Are you out on the ice with Luke schenn and mezaros? You are probably going to get a minus. Just stepped on the ice from a line change and the other team scores? Minus. I can keep going but the point remains…over rated stat.

          • tone January 7, 2014 at 2:50 pm

@ Cartman…that seems like “one of the highest” to me. Even still, a few weeks ago he was at 57% (highest in the league).

          • Cartman January 7, 2014 at 3:01 pm

I don’t understand how 82nd percentile is “one of the highest.” I’d say you’d need to be in the top 10%, closer to 5%. I guess we just disagree on what “one of the highest” is.

And you keep talking about what his stats were a month ago. That was A MONTH AGO. Things change. A month ago Jonathan Quick wasn’t playing. Does that mean he shouldn’t go?

          • tone January 7, 2014 at 3:32 pm

We all know what Jonathan Quick brings…consistency. Do we really know what Giroux would bring?

          • Cartman January 7, 2014 at 4:23 pm

Quick had a .905 save percentage before his injury. Shouldn’t his slow start merit him not being on the team for, say, Bishop, who’s played better this year? No? Same thing with Giroux.

I don’t know what consistency you’re looking for from Giroux. Other than the slow start to this year, he’s been about as consistent a forward as there is in the NHL the last 4 years.

        • bryan January 7, 2014 at 3:49 pm

Considering one of his “minuses” came when Coburn handed the puck to Taylor Hall; I’d say +/- is a highly overrated stat.

My problem with Giroux is with the exit of Richards/Carter and then Pronger he has just fallen into this role of captain and “best player on the team”. So far everything has just been served to him on a silver platter. Its reflected in his work ethic – like people said he’s lazy and takes shifts off. At the end of the game he’s still the “best player on the team”. Plenty of other guys on the team (Read, Voracek, Simmonds) work their asses off for less recognition.

P.S. His best season was the same year as Hartnell’s and while they both played on a line with Jagr. It was enough for a ginormous contract and the C.

I’m not saying he’s not. He’s fallen into the role and he should be – I’d just like more consistency – and I feel like that hurts us. Look at other teams in the league their best players get the puck and they’re dangerous. Can’t say the same about G on a nightly basis.

I know we over value our Flyers from time to time, but I just don’t get the Giroux hate. The guy is the best player, by far, on a mediocre at best team. Its not his fault that the GM has addled his way through his job and put together a mess of a roster. He’s not Howe or Gretzky or Lemieux. But he is one of the best forwards in the sport, and if you watch the game, you see he is usually the best player on the ice when hes out there. Parse the stats however you’d like, the man is legit.
