Tony Gwynn Jr. returned to the Phillies last night after his father passed away last week. As he walked toward the plate for his eighth inning at-bat, those boorish and rude Philly fans welcomed him back the only way they knew how.
Massive props to catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and umpire David Rackley for giving Gwynn an extra few moments to take it all in.
Video after the jump.
Here’s the link if it doesn’t play.

Can’t wait for some jackass national columnist to act surprised that no one threw a snowball at him.
Ha look at that paltry attendance.
First off let me say that this was a great move by the fans and rip tony gwynn
Now I have a debate totally unrelated. Is it acceptable to put ketchup on a cheesesteak?
Not at all
Is it acceptable to put chunky peanut butter on a dog toy? Also the dog toy is in your rectum.
Totally acceptable, just as long as you don’t add mayo and that disgusting cheeze whiz, which would be a total violation.
They’d probably cheer even louder if he wasn’t hitting .153
Does Kyle know the Ken Giles exists?
I loved this. Later that night I gave my mom a huge high five . . .
Can’t believe McCarthy did not talk thru that. Gotta give him props.
Right? These friggin guys talk over 90% of the live action, usually on an unrelated subject.
They may have just turned off his mic.
Then kudos to the producer!
Nice to see the dozens of fans in the seats show their support.
Very cool.
Proud to be a Philly sports fan.
And I would love to see Gwynn Jr. catch on with the Phils and play his way into a starting gig. Easy to root for him.
Agreed. We need more 8 year veterans with a career .239 AVG/.309 OBP/.620 OPS to play for us full-time. Make it happen, Rube. He’s only 31.
And he used to have a family. Too soon?
negative, he’s too young and too talented for this team.
Buzzfeed headlines now though? Please tell me that was meant to be sarcastic in some way
