Went to the Phillies game last night as part of my partial season-ticket plan. My and a buddy watched the game for a couple of innings before heading down to our seats in section 111.

I haven’t been asked to show my my tickets in a couple of years to walk down to my seats. That’s not because the ushers know me from being a season-ticketholder. It’s more so because nobody is showing up at the games any longer and getting seats is never really a problem. If someone happens to have squatted my seats, there are always plenty of other seats for the squatters to go and squat. There’s no need for usher interference.

Last night, I was asked for my tickets. I jokingly asked the young dude if he was serious. He replied that his supervisor was there and he had to ask everyone to show their tickets. His supervisor is that woman pictured above. Once he pointed her out, I felt for the kid. This lady is like the strict nun I had in third grade at Holy Innocents.  I’ve seen her busting stones about tickets and grab someone who swore while walking past her (not at her) and warn the guy, She rules with an iron fist.

I’ll never understand why she would keep people out of the sections if seats are widely available. This was in the fourth inning so you could figure out which seats were up for grabs. Isn’t it better for the fans and the team to have a lower level filled to help create some sense of energy or excitement? Citizens Bank Park is a quiet, boring, depressing environment most games these days. This usher-supervising lady is working to ensure it stays that way while the ballclub struggles. Great work by her.

Here’s the atmosphere she’s going for and the seats she’s protecting:
