Pandemonium Erupts in Toronto as Strange Catcher-Throwback Play Results in Run
Just now in Toronto as the Blue Jays play the Rangers in the deciding game of their series, trash, beer, and other nonsense was thrown on the field as Blue Jays fans disagreed with the call on one of the strangest plays you’ll ever see.
The most bizarre way I've ever seen a run scored in baseball. #BlueJays #Rangers #MLB pic.twitter.com/lu5FaFFTIv

Toronto has to put this sign up to keep fans from being unruly pic.twitter.com/zxfjxPI2hY

As Russel Martin was returning the ball to the pitcher, the ball hit Shin-Soo Choo’s bat, which was still in the batter’s box, and deflected into the infield. A run scored from third on the play, which was originally called a dead ball, but was overturned after a discussion and review. When the run was allowed, Blue Jays fans made an absolute mess of their beautiful, artificial turf surface. A Blue Jay was tossed from the game, and players were yelling at fans from the dugout to stop throwing things as people in lower decks were hit with flying projectiles, including what seemed to be a baby in the first row. I’d make a joke about how you won’t hear about this because it’s not in Philadelphia, but we’ll actually hear about this for years.
